We pulled into Santa Monica in the mid-afternoon. "How many times have you come here?" I asked.
"This is our first time," Kathy replied. "We go to different places every trip."
"We've gone skiing in Vail," Michelle added; "windsurfing off of Catalina; riding burros to the bottom of the Grand Canyon; every vacay, we try something new."
After checking into the hotel, we were shown to our room: a four-bedroom suite with a common area. "What do we do first?" I asked.
"For tonight," Kathy replied, "we'll just stay here: have room service bring us supper, and watch TV. Tomorrow, I think we'll spend a good chunk of the day at the pool, either swimming or working on our tans. The next day, we'll check out the Santa Monica Pier."
"What's the big deal about a pier?"
"It's got rides, games, and restaurants. Or sometimes, they have concerts. Or you can just go out and listen to the ocean."
"Sounds like it can put a guy in the mood," Michelle said.
"What doesn't?" asked Barbara.
"Maybe we can fix Linda up with a cute boy," Michelle suggested.
"Do we have to?" I asked.
"I suppose you don't really have to," Kathy said. "But you are on this trip to find out what being a girl is like; and girls do get friendly with boys from time to time. If you don't, you might never stop asking yourself what might have happened."

We had seafood brought up for supper. After that, we watched a movie. It was about this girl who found herself shrinking. It had some scary moments, but I liked how she held up as she got smaller, with her family and friends to help her.
After the movie, we put our tray outside the door, then went to our bedrooms. I washed my face, then went into my nightly beauty routine. I looked at my naked body again; at the end of this trip, I knew, I would know who I was supposed to be.
