I mean, maybe it could have been cancer. I'd have slogged my way through surgery and chemotherapy; even then, I might not have known if I would see the next morning.
Or maybe what happened to me could have happened; but what if I had been the very first? I'd have been poked and prodded, until the doctors were sure they knew what caused it.
No, I was lucky. I was surrounded by my family and my friends. A doctor explained what was happening to me. In the end, the only consequence was that what started out as the story of the average, all-American boy... became a different story.
******************************
I suppose I should tell you about my life. I lived in a two-story house in suburban St. Paul, Minnesota. My father was an accountant who ran his own firm; my mom was a nurse at a family clinic. There was my big sister, Cait; and my younger siblings, the twins, Patty and Chuck.
I also had some good friends. Next door to me on one side was my best friend, Dan Anderson; on the other side was Becky Buckley, a girl I'd known since I was six years old. That summer, I made two more friends. Melanie Stine was a trans girl; she and her parents moved here from Florida, so she could make her transition in peace. Keiko Hosokawa and her parents moved here from Tokyo; she was a quiet girl, always apologizing for her imperfect grasp of English. We all assured her that her English was way better than our Japanese.
As for me, my name when it started was John Saunders. I was a fairly athletic guy, having played baseball in Little League and junior high. I enjoyed playing video games. I also loved singing, and playing the guitar.
I'm still fairly athletic, I still play video games, and I still sing. But I don't play baseball anymore; I'm a cheerleader. And my name isn't John anymore; it's Heather. And I'm not a guy anymore; I'm a girl.
