Chapter #3How It Began by: BeeJay It seemed like an ordinary morning in early August. I had managed to beat Cait to the bathroom, allowing me first crack at the shower. After I dried off, I toweled the fog off the mirror, in preparation for my morning shave. I'd been shaving for three months now; just peach fuzz, maybe, but it was enough to signify that I was becoming a man.
Or, rather, it had been. Looking at my face, I could see that my cheeks were smooth and hairless as when I was born. "What in the world?" I asked.
Standing up straight, I found another mystery, or maybe another piece of the mystery I was already dealing with: I had been growing hair on my chest for as long as I'd been shaving. Just a few hairs, maybe, but they were there. Today, though, they were gone, just like my peach fuzz.
Puzzled, I combed my hair; at least that hadn't disappeared on me.

After breakfast, I sat on the couch, idly rubbing my chin. Why had my facial hair stopped growing? When would it grow back?
Mom saw me, and sighed. "Worried about school, John?" she asked.
I hadn't been thinking about school, of course; but I said nothing.
"You'll do fine in high school, honey. I know you will. I'm sure they'll have a talent show; once they do, all you have to do is sing and play, and you'll have them eating out of the palm of your hand."
"You really think so?" I asked; then, I winced. At the last two words, my voice cracked.
"Do that again!" Patty said.
"Leave him be," Cait said.
"I'm not here for your amusement," I replied.
"That's funny," Mom said.
"I fail to see the humor," I replied.
"Not funny, ha-ha; funny, peculiar. Your voice should have gone down, but it hasn't."
"Really?" My voice did sound higher. "First, I lose my peach fuzz; now, my voice goes funny?"
"Your peach fuzz? That doesn't sound normal at all. Cait, keep an eye on the twins; I need to get your brother to a doctor about this." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
