"Ah," said Melona, her mood quickly souring. Not even infernal magics meant to lull mortals into an amorous stupor could make talking about her Melina Pearsly, Melona's mother, a pleasant affair. "What about her?"
"It's just that," Cosyt paused. "Forgive me, but your mother's family isn't particularly wealthy, is it?"
Melona shook her head. "No."
"Then why did your father marry her? It's to my understanding that the Pearsly family doesn't let their hearts or um. Other organs. From intervening in their marriage strategy."
Melona cringed at the phrase 'Other organs.' Cosyt was clearly trying to be as minimally lewd as possible, which couldn't have been easy, but this was still uncomfortable.
"Mom's a powerful caster," said Melona. "Powerful enough to make up for the fact that she's not from a particularly wealthy family."
"I see," said Cosyt. "That rather confirms my suspicions."
Melona looked at her professor. "What suspicions?"
"Well," said Cosyt, "I hate to answer a question with a question, but--"
