Nothing happened.
She tried again, imagining a steak dinner, then a bowl of pasta, a pizza, and finally a huge plate of ribs, all the while trying to coax her magic into using the food as fuel. Nothing. The spells didn't work, and the dummy continued its blank stare.
"Hmm..." Chantess mused, "Disappointing."
"Perhaps." Frostbite said, fixing her glasses, "But I assumed you were smart enough to know not to expect anything from this one."
"That's-" Chantess began, but was cut off by the sound of Ginger setting her cup against the table and standing up.
"Regardless, your company was an unexpected pleasure." The half-giant continued, the slightest bit of fondness in her cold, robotic voice. She pulled a business card out from between her breasts and set it on the table, next to her cup. "I wouldn't mind another chat some time."
"Oh. Oh!" Chantess said, flushing slightly, "Indeed. It is rare to find someone I consider agreeable." Chantess stood up as well, and Melona bore witness to the only handshake she had ever seen that was somehow simultaneously stiff, business-like, and homoerotic. She would have to suppress a laugh, if only she wasn't overwhelmed with crushing shame. Especially as Frostbite left without another word, not even acknowledging Melona.
"Now then, Mrs.Pearsly..." Chantess started, but Melona didn't want to deal with any more rejection.
"I-I know. I'm... Sorry..." Melona murmured, "I really thought..."
She flinched as she felt her voice crack, her face becoming hot with embarrassment. She whipped around before Chantess could see.
"Well, inventing a new spell can be-"
"Stop!" Melona cried, tears forming, "I... I know I can't handle it."
"That isn't-"
"Just stop!" The young witch insisted, "I know I wasn't good enough! I know this was a dumb idea! I'm sorry for wasting your time."
Melona strode towards the door... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
