Chapter #3

Medieval-A Castle for My Own

    by: Shadow18 Author IconMail Icon
You see before you a massive castle on the horizon. It seems to be a super large castle, with massive walls and turrets and multiple smaller buildings. It seems to be a massive town surrounded by protective walls in all directions. You step out of the forest and see how your shadow stretches out in front of you right to the gates of the city. So much for the element of surprise.

You start walking alongside the ribbon of road following the trail straight to the gates of the castle town. You decided not to crush any of the caravans or walking creatures on the trail--you were about to cause enough destruction ahead of you in the city. As you look down at your feet, you see caravans being pulled by centaurs, and steered by dark elves. You stride past them, leaving them looking up in awe, horror, and wonder at the massive being overshadowing their puny existences.

As you stroll closer to the city, you move into pasture lands. You see large groups of herding animals--what look like minotaur herds, were-sheep being corralled by wolf-man and even large lizards roaming in paddocks. You think about how not to interrupt the every-day living creatures below, but you need to get to the castle. You begin to walk forward, stepping over the larger groups, and trying to set your foot in the empty areas so as not to squish the critters below without good reason.

You are now looking at the castle grounds. They seem to be like out of a fairy-tale or even a tiny model set. You see little cottage buildings with the citizens cowering in doorways and shutting up windows to try and hide from the supreme monster towering above them. You also see tiers of protective walls that lead up to the main centerpiece. As the tiers go higher and higher up this hill, you see the buildings getting progressively bigger and more extensive—going from roughhewn cottages to mercantile 2-story buildings, and then from merchant buildings to what look like manor estates for rich families. Finally, you see the castle. It stands at the pinnacle of the medieval town as its own tiny model in a town model. You could probably look the thing over all day and see new tiny details in each wall, window, and garden space. You even notice sets of gargoyles living on the corners of the towers that look down on the courtyards as sentries. Also, it seems to have the most live patrols; the guards are currently swarming the walls taking a look at the great invading being before them.

You make a slow walk around the perimeter of the outer most wall. The defensive height is just about the size to match your giant shin, so it is not as tall as the forest that you first walked thru. The defensive walls seem to be fairly thick—you even see a chariot riding on one part—what looks like a centaur horse driving around a dark-elf commander. It seems they have not closed the gate just yet—either to allow some of the caravans you passed to enter with supplies before they undergo a siege, or maybe because they realize that you can step right over the wall making the gate closure a worthless effort.

You see small water wells and decorative fountains, but no river, pond or lake for them to use as a large-scale water source. It seems all traffic comes by land methods, with the herds living off pasture lands, and the caravans on the roadways you see entwined around the castle grounds. You don’t see any air-traffic—no dragons or wyverns or harpies or flying bug people around—not that they might be grounded already and hiding from your presence.

As you notice all the details in the buildings, and all the people that are now cowering in your shadow, you start to have concerns and thoughts about what to do next. One hand, you can simply make the whole city your dinner bowl—eat the lot, and whatever you don’t eat now you keep as a cupboard to eat later. You also feel with all the exercise you have done, you need to use the facilities, and you think you feel something coming down the pipeline. As you admire the buildings, you also think you could take over the whole place—either by eliminating the royal family in one go or forcing the people to surrender to your will by being cut off from any outside help. Finally, you can make them understand you are under the command of the Goddess, and you can always recruit her followers to act as your go-between for the masses.
