Chapter #3

Riley Damon

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
My name is Riley Damon, and this is what happened.

I was the eldest daughter of Anthony and Bree Damon. Then came Esme, who was 13, and glued to her smartphone. Then came Jocelyn, whose birth five years before came as a bit of a surprise: Mom, apparently, had absolutely no idea that she was pregnant, until she gave birth.

Beyond my home life was Aiko. She and her family moved in when I was 12, and we hit it off right away. Then, when puberty hit, we began showing each other our bodies, which led to us exploring each other's bodies. Before we knew it, we were in love.

I had a strong academic record, and planned to study Journalism, with an eye to becoming a TV reporter.

And then everything changed.

******************************

It was the morning of my 18th birthday when it happened. School was still out for winter break. Dad had wanted to surprise me on my birthday; however, the day before, I had seen him driving an old car into our garage, and he had to admit that it was my birthday present. Of course, he could still hang onto the keys until the day itself, so that's what he did.

So that's what I was thinking about when I woke up that day. I looked around my room, thinking about how much my life had changed since I was a little girl.

My eyes settled on the door frame, where Mom and Dad had chronicled my growth, from when I could first stand still until I had stopped growing at the age of 15. On a whim, I walked over to the door frame and stood against it, holding my hand at the top of my head. Then, I stepped away, and saw where my hand was.

"What? That can't be right."

I triple-checked everything: my feet were together, and flat on the floor; my knees were straight; my back was straight. Grabbing a pencil, I marked my height. Then, I looked.

"That's impossible."

Finding a tape measure, I checked to see if all the marks were right. I knew it was unlikely that someone had changed the marks as a prank, on the off chance that I would decide to measure myself. But the alternative seemed even more unlikely.

The upper mark, made when I was 15, was at 5', 8".

The mark I'd just made was at 5', 7".

Somehow, I had become shorter.
