Chapter #6

No More Denial

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
For a few days, I was able to pretend that my situation was manageable. That whatever happened to me could be ignored.

At a thrift store, I found a pair of shoes that fit (I tried not to think about how the size was smaller than what I usually wore), with thick soles; these, I reasoned, would camouflage whatever had made me smaller.

When Dad, Allie, and Libbie got home, they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Allie didn't even complain that I was wearing shoes inside the house. I had kept the place clean, and that was enough.

Just like I believed that what I was doing was enough.

******************************

At school on Monday, Taylor and Quinn were impressed with how I was taller than Taylor again, and maybe a little bit taller than Quinn again. "Neat trick," Quinn said, when I showed them my new shoes. "They nearly had me fooled."

Taylor agreed. "Hopefully, you won't be needing them much longer. Of course, you won't be able to wear them for practice."

"Nobody noticed anything during the game," I replied. "I should be okay."

******************************

Practice went okay. Mrs. Langton, our cheerleading coach, gave us some new cheers to work on.

After practice, we hit the showers, laughing, as usual. Then, drying off, we went to our lockers.

From behind, Taylor said, "There's something wrong."

"Like what?" I asked.

"I think... Staci, I think you're smaller. I mean smaller than you were Friday."

With a start, I realized she was right. I had to look up slightly to look her in the eyes. "Crap."

"I think you'd better talk to your folks about this."

I knew better than to argue.

******************************

When I got home, Allie was fixing supper. "Hi, honey," she said. "How'd practice go?"

"I'm getting smaller."

She looked up from our meal. "I beg your pardon?"

"I'm getting smaller. I managed to hide it for a little while, but I don't think I can hide it much longer. Allie, I need help."

She grabbed Dad's tape measure, and double-checked. There was no doubt about it: I had definitely shrunk.
