Chapter #3My Life in Miniature by: BeeJay My name is Staci Williams, and this is my story.
I'm from East Rockaway, Long Island. I live with my father, Gavin; my stepmother, Allie; and my half-sister, Libbie. My mom left us ten years ago, with no explanation: I just came home from school one day, and she was gone. I guess, whatever she wanted out of life, Dad and I weren't it.
I went to Larchmont High, where I was a cheerleader. My best friends, Taylor Kent and Quinn, were also on the cheer squad; although Quinn might have seemed an unlikely cheerleader to some, due to being nonbinary. But they wore their cheerleading uniform with pride, and always made sure the Wildcats knew they were on their side.
Besides cheerleading, I was also dating Jesse Stuart, the star player on the basketball team. We were pretty serious; and, now that I was 18, it seemed pretty certain that he and I would be making love for the first time soon.
Outside of school and cheerleading, I was seriously into fashion. I don't just mean I always made sure I was looking good; I was way into designing clothes, as well. I was definitely hoping to get into FIT once I graduated. For those of you who don't know, FIT is the Fashion Institute of Technology; if you didn't go study in Paris or Milan, you'd better have FIT on your resume, or they won't even take your designs at the discount stores.
As for what I looked like: Well, I had blonde hair and blue eyes; I was definitely athletic, given my spot on the cheer squad; and I had stood at 5', 8" since I turned 15.
Who would have imagined it would be that last part that would change?
******************************
It was just a few days before school started again. Senior year. I figured, if I kept my grades up, the admission board would only need to see my designs to know that I had definite potential.
It was a Saturday, so I was scoping out the stores for inspiration. I looked at the mannequins, imagining seeing my own line on display. When I was done, I got into the car Dad had bought me when I turned 18 (it may not have looked like much, but it ran, without making a lot of smoke or noise), and headed for home. It was a nice day, so I had the windows down. Ahead of me was a tanker truck. It shouldn't be a problem, I thought; you'd need a real situation before that gas would get out.
Maybe I was tempting fate. As the tanker went through the intersection, a car came the other way, and slammed right into the big tank. Immediately, I had the contents dumped right on my car - and me, since I had the windows down. I was wrong: It wasn't gasoline; it was some green goo with the consistency of motor oil. Needless to say, I was soaked in the stuff.
Hazmat teams came in no time flat, scrubbing the scene. As for me, they had an RV come for me, so I could get scrubbed, too. Then, they gave me some scrubs to wear (so not my color, though maybe I shouldn't be complaining), handed me my things, and let me drive home. It was a bit of a kerfuffle, but they took care of the situation, and that was that.
At least, it seemed to be. | Members who added to this interactive story also contributed to these: |
