At eight o'clock in the morning, Evan drove early to Jade's house. He parked his SUV in the underground parking lot and brought the gifts he had prepared - flowers, pastries, and also a crystal ring he specially prepared for Jade. The inner ring of the ring was engraved with J and E.
Jade rented a small apartment near the bustling downtown area. Evan took the elevator to the 11th floor, turned a corner and found Room 1103C. He pressed the doorbell.
No one answered.
"Could I be too early?" Evan wondered, looking at the time. According to Jade's habits, she would wake up promptly at 6:30 every morning. Before 7 o'clock, she would go for a morning run from her rented apartment to the nearby park, running three laps and then running back. Along the way, she would buy breakfast at a small store. She was a very disciplined person and these habits were almost immutable.
Just as Evan took out his phone to send Jade a message, he heard the sound of the elevator door opening around the corner, followed by Jade's somewhat unhappy voice.
"Hey, E___, we agreed! You..."
"Okay okay Honey, I know...just...stop...ok?"
Hearing another voice, Evan's doubts grew even heavier. The stairwell was not spacious and he clearly distinguished only one set of footsteps, yet the other voice addressed Jade as "Honey", which they had never used between themselves.
When Jade and the other "person" turned the corner of the corridor, Evan finally understood.
Jade was wearing white sneakers, tight gray yoga pants, a black cropped sports bra, and had a zipped up sports hoodie on top, except the zipper was only pulled up halfway - for a simple reason, there were now two heads protruding side by side from Jade's torso. The other voice obviously belonged to the other head, E___.
