Chapter #5

Doggone Accident

    by: KevinInuzuka Author IconMail Icon
As Larry approached the stroller, he noticed a small commotion. A squirrel had climbed into the basket beneath the stroller and was frantically rummaging through the baby supplies. Larry froze for a moment, unsure how to handle the situation.

“Shoo!” he said, waving a hand, but the squirrel only paused to glance up at him before continuing its chaotic rummaging.

Before Larry could intervene, a nearby woman walked past, holding the leash of a plump little Pug that waddled alongside her. The dog sniffed the air and let out an excited bark, which startled the squirrel.

In his panic, Larry’s new powers activated again. His eyes glowed faintly, and before he could stop it, the squirrel’s head vanished, reappearing on the Pug’s body. Simultaneously, the Pug’s head appeared on the squirrel’s tiny frame.

The woman froze mid-step, staring at her dog turned vermin.

“Buster?” she said, her tone uncertain as she crouched down to examine the dog. The Pug, now with the head of a squirrel, tilted its head and chittered, its beady eyes glinting with confusion.

“Oh my goodness,” the woman murmured, then shook her head. “I must’ve been so distracted I never noticed how… unique your face was, Buster!” She scratched behind the squirrel-headed Pug’s ears, seemingly unbothered.

Meanwhile, the squirrel, now with the Pug’s head, attempted to scurry up a tree. The mismatched proportions made it clumsy, and it let out a series of frustrated barks before tumbling back down to the ground.

Larry stared in wide-eyed disbelief. “Oh no,” he whispered, glancing at his mother.

She, still oblivious to the bizarre events unfolding, clapped her hands happily.

Larry groaned. “This is getting out of hand,” he muttered, gently placing his mother back into the stroller.

Just as he considered trying to fix the accidental swap, the woman stood up and walked away with the squirrel-headed Pug trotting alongside her, tail wagging.

Larry sighed and looked back at the squirrel with the Pug’s head, now barking at him. “Guess I’ll have to figure out how to fix this later,” he said, shaking his head.

For now, he tucked his mother back into the stroller and continued their walk, pretending none of it had ever happened.
