Named SV8mm (Shrinking Virus, 8 millimeters), or just Shrinking Virus, struck our society and shocked our way of life as nothing had ever before. After catching the virus, the person could stay without showing symptoms for months, when, out of a sudden, she would feel dizzy and suddenly shrink to 8 millimeters tall (0,3 inches). The truth about where the virus originated, or how it could shrink people, was never answered. Some people believe the government released it as a population decreasing major, others believed it was aliens, and others, the wrath of god...
After some time, people just started to almost "get used" to the way things were. Sure, at first, seeing a relative or friend in a diminutive state was shocking and devasting. The expectation of life of a person in this state was one to three weeks after being shrunken, this, if they were even able to get the attention of those around them, most of the time, their caretaker would accidentally drop or crush them, or they would just get sick and not be able to get the proper help thanks to their puny size being unfit for any kind of surgery.
A lot of people would just shrink out of nowhere and get killed by the oblivious giants around them. Every day on the news there was a case of someone who was having a romantic dinner with their girlfriend, shrunk while she was in the bathroom, fell into her plate, and got eaten alive by the love of their life, or someone who was visiting a relative, shrunk, and got crushed by the sandal of their unaware aunt, mother or sister.
In the begging, people made protests demanding proper treatment for tinies, demanding that the government should take care of them and provide ways to reintegrate them into society. Unfortunately, after some time, people realized that tinies just couldn't help with anything, they were far too weak and vulnerable to do any work and, since they need special clothes, food and shelter, they were very expensive. People started to see them as parasites.
It didn't help either that some of the few researches made about the virus found out that it had a tendency of infecting and shrinking people who were considered "weak", basically, the virus shrunk losers. After this, a lot of people claimed that the shrinking virus was a blessing and that people should start getting rid of any kind of tiny that was found, soon, tiny people lose most of their rights.
Now, even after being found, tiny people had the risk of being disposed off by their previous friends or even by people from their own family. It wasn't rare to see cases of "loser sons" that, after being shrunken and found, got eaten alive by their mothers, or cases of nerds that were crushed on purpose by their school's cheerleaders. Some people could even claim that they were pro-tiny, but, when being face to face with a person that was smaller than a fingernail, it was hard to not get a rush of power and resist the urge to feel the tiny struggling on the back of their throat or under their soles...
