Chapter #4

Business 101: Expansion Through Subtraction

Amanda’s trip to maintenance would take some time, as they were all the way down at the 2nd floor. They also were seldom in their office, since they were frequently in other parts of the building working on various tasks. She waited for their return, but after only a few minutes received a phone call from another department head and her attention was diverted elsewhere. She eventually forgot all about the events that had transpired earlier due to getting swept up in her work, as was often the case.

Meanwhile, the day in the office progressed normally. Megan, her boss, continued to make her way smoothly and methodically through her schedule, until after a brief lunch she looked at her tablet and cringed in disgust at the name listed in the current time slot.

Kristi Fuller. Megan had known, and hated her since they had attended the same college. Everything Megan was and had accomplished, Kristi seemed to eclipse. Megan stood at a very respectable 6’0”, Kristi was 6’2”; Megan graduated Magna Cum Laude, Kristi graduated Summa Cum Laude; Megan became a department head at QuanTech, one of the world’s leading tech companies; Kristi became a VP at its main competitor, EdgeComm. While it was completely reasonable for someone to be a few rungs ahead on the ladder, Megan surmised Kristi had made it her personal mission to step on Megan’s fingers every chance she got.

Stepping into the meeting room, the QuanTech executive was once again transfixed on her tablet, taking a seat on the end of a long table. Her rival was already seated at the other side, flanked by two standing men in matching black suits.

“Hello, Megan,” Kristi called over to her, polite yet with only a thin facade of warmth.

“Good afternoon,” was all Megan could be bothered to answer, still not making eye contact.

“It’s been a while. How have you b—”

“Kristi, if you don’t mind, I’m quite busy today, so how about we skip the chit-chat and get straight to business?”

Kristi shrugged, completely unfazed by the curt reply. “Ok then. You’re fired.”

Megan froze for a few seconds before finally looking up from her tablet, her brow furrowed in unamused confusion. “What?”

“Canned. Sacked. Let go. Lots of ways to say it. I prefer the classic though.”

Megan stared at Kristi with a mixture of disbelief and disgust. “You don’t even…” she paused to sigh, lowering her head and clutching the bridge of her nose between her thumb and forefinger as a migraine had suddenly flared into existence. “If you seriously called a meeting just for this shitty joke…”

“I mean…I guess I could have since I’m the CEO of QuanTech now, but that wouldn’t be very professional of me now, would it?” Kristi slid a packet of papers across the table in Megan’s direction. “The board voted this morning to accept a buyout offer from EdgeComm, then replaced the old CEO with me.”

Megan snatched the papers off the table and began thumbing through them. She initially maintained her annoyed scowl, but it quickly morphed into concern. “How…I-I never heard anything about this!”

A small smile crept onto Kristi’s face as she allowed her facade to slip slightly. “The board agreed it was best to keep the change in ownership negotiations close to the chest, considering the day-to-day operations within QuanTech would remain unaffected—well, almost.”

Megan shook her head fiercely, nearly throwing the stack of papers back at Kristi. “If you actually did any research, you would have known you can’t just fire me. My employment contract explicitly states any decision regarding termination of my employment is subject to a majority vote by the board. I know plenty of board members personally. That vote would never pass.”

“You’re probably right,” Kristi inclined her head, pretending to consider this before sliding another stack of papers across the table, “which is why I did in fact, do some research, and I found that if the sales numbers in your department are in decline for 3 straight months (as shown), the CEO has the option to make unilateral changes to any department personnel. It only makes sense to start at the top.”

“Bullshit!” Megan spat, this time actually throwing the papers against the wall after only a quick glance at several rows of red ink on the first page. “These sales numbers are completely wrong! I have the real numbers in my—”

She stopped abruptly, her face falling as the realization hit her. Tim’s reports…so that’s why. That bastard was in on this! She took another moment to compose herself, but silently fumed when she saw Kristi’s knowing smile stretch slightly wider. “Fine, then. I’ll bring up all the invoices myself, one by one if I have to.”

“I’m afraid all your accounts have been disabled,” Kristi leaned back in her chair and rested her high-heeled feet on the table, the false air of professionalism all but vanished now. “Non-employees having access to company databases is a huge security risk after all. Now, these gentlemen will be more than happy to escort you first to your office to clean out your desk, then out of the building. I’ve even taken a block out of my schedule to accompany you as well.”

Megan opened her mouth for a retort, but none came. She could so nothing more but proceed out of the meeting room and back down the hall toward her office.

That fucking bitch! her rage built further inside of her. She can’t do this to me! If only I had the authentic reports, I could sue her ass into oblivion, or worse!

Then her face lit up. Amanda! She would have the same access I did. I need to get to her office!

Reaching an intersection, Megan broke off and ran in the direction opposite from her office and toward Amanda’s. Barging through the doorway and seeing the empty chair behind the desk, she grit her teeth and growled in irritation.

Dammit, she’s not here! Megan made a split-second adjustment to her plan, rushing over to the desk. She always writes everything down. Maybe she has her password in her desk somewhere… she rummaged through each drawer starting from the top, slamming them shut angrily when her search turned up with nothing.

“Megan, please…this is beneath you,” Kristi’s voice called from the doorway as she and the two security guards had caught up with her. Megan looked up and glared at them, her hand still fumbling aimlessly through the bottom drawer, until it bumped something that made a soft click.

Pausing and raising an eyebrow, she grasped the unfamiliar object just as a whirring noise began to emanate from it, slowly building in pitch. Pulling it out of the drawer, she found herself staring right down the gun’s barrel, which was lit up a bright green.

“Huh…?” was all she could manage to utter before she was blasted in the face point-blank with a bolt of luminous energy the same color as the barrel. She staggered back with a start, dropping the gun and reflexively rubbing her eyes, trying to regain her vision. Surprisingly, it returned to normal within just a couple of seconds, causing Megan to breathe a sigh of relief that no permanent damage was done. She had no sooner finished this exhale when a sharp spasm shot up her spine, drawing her breath back into her throat. Spotting something in her peripheral, she looked down and widened her eyes to see her chest had inflated at least two cup sizes and now strained the top button of her blouse.

Megan was about to voice her bewilderment when another spasm hit, inflating her bust further and snapping the button clean off to reveal her lacy red bra underneath. Her shocked expression matched those of Kristi and the guards, but it soon changed to a curious-looking grimace as she felt the rest of her body thicken and expand, the outlines ridges of muscle taking underneath her blazer. Her skirt climbed up her broadening thighs and lengthening legs, then began to audibly tear as its limits were reached.

Suddenly, a cluster of green sparks jumped from Megan’s skin, lighting up her entire frame and causing her to shudder. “HrrrrrrrrrnnnNNNNGH!” She groaned as her body burst free all at once from her garments, her breasts snapping her bra clean off and reducing her blouse to tatters. Her enormous arms severed her sleeves at the seams and both her skirt and underwear fell away from her swelling hips in a shredded heap. Her form sprouted to 8 feet before the transformation came to a halt, leaving a newly massive Megan gazing in awe at the changes and breathing heavily from the rush.

For the next several seconds, a paperclip could have been heard landing on the carpet, but the silence didn’t last.

“What the fuck?”

Kristi couldn’t help but blurt this out, and though it would prove to be her first mistake of the day, it was a major one. Megan snapped back to reality and looked over at the trio, a sinister smile forming on her face.

Kristi barely had time to take a step back before Megan grabbed the underside of the desk in front of her with one hand and flung it to the side, sending it and all its contents flying and crashing into the wall of the office. Glancing in satisfaction at her arm and the huge latent power within, she stepped menacingly toward the figures in the doorway. Surprisingly, the security guards’ training instinct overruled their survival instinct and they both charged, but were sent in the same direction as the desk with one backhand swing from Megan. Kristi turned to flee but was caught by her collar, causing her to stumble and snap the heels off her shoes. She looked up in terror, hanging limply in Megan’s iron grasp.

“The only thing beneath me right now,” Megan grinned maliciously, squeezing the doorframe with her free hand and bending the metal, “is you.”
