The New Me

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
Mrs. Daniels worked for more than a week on her designs.

One day, Dr. Daniels came to me. "It's time for you to meet the new you, #15."

"Thank you, Creator."

"For this, we wish to surprise you. Accordingly, I will deactivate you until you are ready to see your new appearance. Also, there are a few alterations to your structure that I will need to make. You will be reactivated when the work is done, I promise you."

"Thank you, Creator."

He pressed my off switch.

When I was reactivated, the Daniels family was gathered before me. "How do you feel?" Mrs. Daniels asked.

"I am functioning within normal parameters," I replied. Then, I said, "My voice sounds different."

"One of the alterations I mentioned," Dr. Daniels explained. "Your voice is now more suited to your outward appearance."

"May I see?"

Dr. Daniels nodded, and Felix brought me a mirror. I extended a flesh-covered hand and took it.

If I breathed, I would say that it was breathtaking. I had the appearance of a human female, approximately the same age as Elizabeth. I had blonde hair, and blue eyes.

I tested my mouth servos, and smiled. "Thank you, Creator."

"You're welcome," Dr. Daniels said, "but you should extend your gratitude to my wife."

"I did," I explained. "She created my appearance, just as you created my structure. Together, you have created my body."

"She's got a point, dear," Mrs. Daniels said. Then, to me, she said, "You're very welcome, #15."

"I don't want to keep calling her #15," Elizabeth said. "Let's give her a real name. After all, you gave Felix one."

"True enough," Mrs. Daniels replied. "What do you think of... Bridget?"

"Bridget," I repeated. Then, I looked in the mirror again, and repeated the name. "Bridget. It seems appropriate."

"It does, indeed," Dr. Daniels said. "Welcome to a new phase of your existence, Bridget."

His words were true: my existence would never be the same again, and not just because I would see more of the house than the basement laboratory.
