Chapter #3

When Brothers Collide

    by: JakeTheHusky Author IconMail Icon
After a few minutes of thought, you determine you should...

Swap with Luke (your older brother)

You've always liked Luke, and now you might have a chance to see what it's like to be him! At least, if this machine works the way it says it does. You still feel skeptical about it, but after having found a secret basement room behind your bedroom bookshelf... you wouldn't be too surprised

Since he's not home yet, but you're sure he should be soon, you sit and wait for him to come home on his own, rather than try to rush him over. You consider whether to tell him what you're doing, and decide to just see how it plays out first. You walk back upstairs to your bedroom and sit on the bed. Scrolling through social media, you wait for Luke to come home...

After about half an hour, your mom comes home. You go and greet her as usual and she asks you to feed Rufus and let him outside. You oblige, and after bringing him inside, it's not long before your brother Luke comes home. You greet him and watch him take his stuff to his room, prepared to sit and do nothing like you just had. You take a deep breathe, and walk to his bedroom door

Peeking inside, you see his tidy athlete-style bedroom. A couple jerseys and some cool sports posters hung on the walls. You see Luke sitting on his bed on his phone, and prepare yourself for what you're about to say. You knock as you open the door further

"Hey Luke. Uh... I was wondering if you could come see something real quick."

Luke looks up at you and shrugs. "Sure, I guess. As long as it's better than sitting here." He stands and looks at you expectantly

"It's in my room." You nod your head in that direction, and he follows you in. You shut the door just to be careful, and turn around to see him glancing around expectantly. "You won't find it." You smirk as he looks back with slight annoyance

"Well, what is it then?" He eyes you skeptically and sits down on the edge of your bed

"Don't be so impatient." You laugh "It's right here..." You approach the bookshelf. Reaching to the back of the shelf, you push the button and watch as the door slowly opens. You turn to see Luke scrambling to his feet

"Bro what?!" He's just as shocked as your were to find it, since he definitely knew as well as you did there should have been nothing behind it. "I swear this didn't used to be here..." He comes up beside you and sticks his hand out through the doorway, verifying it was real. He suddenly turns to you with excitement. "What's down there? Have you gone in yet?"

"Of course I've been in! That's the first thing I did!" You chuckle quietly at his sudden excitement. "As for what's down there... why don't you come see?" You begin walking down the stairs, and it takes a good ten or so steps before you hear Luke's footsteps echoing behind you. Soon, the two of you reach the bottom and you spread your arms in a gesture to show off the room. "Well, here it is. Wanna try it out?"

Luke just stares in awe and confusion for a few moments, not sure what to make of the strange machine. "What is it?"

"It's a... machine. Obviously!"

He looks at you with amused skepticism. "You don't know what it does, do you?"

You sigh. "I have an idea but I don't know if it works or not. Wanna test it out?"

"What do you think it'll do?" He asks with caution. You know he's not big on surprises, and this sure would be one if it works

"Why should I say? I may be completely wrong! It may not work and it's all for nothing, just a cool thing to look at. At the far chance it does work it'll be an adventure! Come on, give it a go?" You wait quietly, hoping he goes with it. You really don't want to have to convince him by telling him what it supposedly does

"You sure it won't blow up on us or something?" His curiosity is peaked, he just doesn't want to admit it

"I'm going to be inside it too! If it does it'll be just as bad for me as..." You roll your eyes. "Look, I'll turn it on once without anything in the pod things and we'll see if it blows up. If it doesn't, then will you give it a go?"

"Uh..." he looks around but doesn't see a way out of the situation without looking stupid. He sighs. "Fine... but if I get hurt you better tell mom you did it."

"Deal."

You turn to the machine and take a deep breath. Walking over to the pods, you make sure there's nothing inside them, and shut the doors. Then, walking back to the terminal, you press the big red button and the ten second timer slowly runs out. The machine starts up, and you hear a loud whirring sound. After a few moments, nothing else happens. Then the whirring slows and comes to an end, the pod doors wide open once again

"See? No explosion!" You poked his chest to enforce your point. He steps back and watches the pods with interest. "Hey!" You wave your hand in front of his face to get his attention. "A deal's a deal. Now come on, get in the pod."

"But... I..." he struggles to come up with anything and exhales in frustration. "Fine... just..." he moves towards one of the pods. He leans against the inside with his arms crossed against his chest and glares out at you. He tries to look upset, but you can tell he's at least a little excited. You roll your eyes. "Shut the door! It won't work if it's open."

Attempting to be mocking, he shuts the door and waits inside the pod. You press the button on the terminal, and run to the other pod. You shut the door, and count in your head with the beat of the timer. After ten seconds, the whirring starts up again, and this time it's a lot louder. You cover your ears as they start to ring, and shut your eyes as a bright light slowly lights up the inside the pods. You don't realize your mouth is open and yelling, or that you've crumpled to the floor. It's not painful exactly, maybe just overstimulating? You eventually break and you pass out

After who knows how long, you...

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Wake up (Marcus's perspective)

2. Wake up (Luke's perspective)

*Noteb*
3. Wake up (Swapped personalities instead)

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
