Robert had never seen John so happy before. With his lost son safe and sound, why wouldn't he be? But later that night, something happened that brought the celebration to a halt. After another day of farm work, Robert was relaxing in his favorite armchair, watching some television before bed when he heard the unmistakable sound of a gunshot from outside.
Robert immediately grabbed his shotgun and went to see what was going on, when he saw James coming towards the farmhouse with both hands over his stomach. "James! What happened?" James was in too much pain to speak. He slowly moved his hands to show the bleeding wound in his belly. He'd been shot.
After getting his son inside and waking the rest of the family, James lay in bed holding gause over his wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding. "Who did this?" Julia demanded with fury in her voice. "I don't know." James said between pained breaths. "I heard a noise by the corral and went to look. There was some humans trying to steal our horses. They wore masks, I didn't see their faces. I startled them and one of them pulled a gun. They got away."
"Hannah, call the doctor." Robert ordered. "I think I know who did this. I've heard rumors of a group of rebel humans calling themselves the Rokanowa Raiders. They've been attacking farms across the county and recruiting livestock into their gang, but I didn't think they were real. "There's an abandoned farm about fifty miles west. I'd bet anything that's where their base is. No doubt they're all armed, it would be suicide to take them on now. I hear there's at least two hundred of them."
