Chapter #5

Noticed the name on her tag

    by: Hole Author IconMail Icon
You were stuffing your documents back in your bag and were preparing to go upstairs until you notice something about the receptionist: her name tag. It read "Vernica F Cooper". Cooper was the last name of your missing mother and Vernica was the name your dad said she wanted to give your sister. The P was new to you but you had a theory.

"Excuse me um, Is your middle name perhaps 'Franklin'?" you ask her.

"Um, oh yeah. How'd you know?" she said.

"Th-that's the name of my dad," you say.

"Oh really? What a coincidence. Did he tell you about me? I don't remember every guest who comes here, I'm sorry," she says still ignorant of who you were.

"Um, sort of," you wanted to tell her so bad, but you knew you had to ease her into it if you wanted her to believe you. "Do you have any bothers or sisters?"

"Mmm, no. None." she says.

"None that you know of?" you ask to confirm.

"I guess?" she said, getting wary of all the questions.

"And, do you have a father."

"Uh, I was born twenty years ago so... yeah."

"But have you met him before?"

"Get to the point sir. I'm this close to calling security."

"Look, I know this'll sound crazy but," you take a breath. "I'm your brother, Philip Johnson."

"...what?" Vernica said, clearly not believing you.

"I'm your brother, we got separated at birth."

Vernica let out a suppressed laugh. "Okay. I don't know what you're trying to pull, but judging by your accent and the fact you don't have any seams on your body, I'm guessing your human? How can a human and a modular be brother and sister?"

"Modular and Human DNA aren't that different. Interbreeding is very possible."

"Okay sure. And how did we get separated then?"

"Well according to my dad, when mom got pregnant they were living on Earth. But Earth and Modu were much more intolerant of each other at the time. So they decided that when we were born, if we were born like humans they would stay on earth together but if we were born like modulars they would all move to Modu. But you were born like a modular and me a human. So they chose to move back to their respective planets for our sake."

"Wow, nice sob story. You win your middle school writing contest with that?"

"It's what my dad told me what happened."

"Oh so HE won the middle school writing contest. Good for him."

Dang, she wasn't believing you. "Your birthday!" you realize.

"Huh? What do you-"

"It's April 26, 2270."

"Wha- No it isn't its-"

"Quadracary 29, 93. In the modular calendar."

"What the-? How do you know that?"

"Your mother is Elzibee Cooper. Brown hair, brown eyes. Was a student studying abroad on Earth in the late 80s-early 90s."

"My mom? How do you know her?"

"Her first name is my middle name."

"Oh, so your dad named you after a one night stand or something?"

"It wasn't a one night stand, they loved each other. But-"

"Okay, that's it. I'm calling security."

"No wait!" you say, reaching over and grabbing her hand before it picks up the phone. But in your panic you forget about Modular's detachment ability and accidentally take off her hand.

"Hey! Give her back!" she yells reaching for her body part. Luckily the lobby is empty so there's no one to start a commotion.

You hold her hand out of her grasp, essentially taking a hostage since it was alive and sentient, but you had no choice now. Plus you had one more thing you wanted to try. "You have a birthmark shaped sorta like a bird," you exclaim.

"Just drop that already. You're not my-" she stopped midway through her sentence as she heard a tap from behind the desk. She looked down. "What are you-" she was silent again. Then her eyes widened. She looked back to you. Guessing what she was thinking, you hand her hand back to her. She takes it and reattaches it to her wrist. Vernica's foot rises up and she grabs a hold of it with her hand. Like a glove, she slips her entire now detached leg out of her pant leg. She places her severed left leg on the counter for you both to see.

"Oh my god," Vernica said. On the back of her thigh was the birth mark. it wasn't exactly like a bird, but it was close enough to make the connection.

"You see. I have the same one on the same spot. Let me show you," you say. You try to go around the desk but...

"Get away from me!" Vernica yells. She backs away but moving backwards on one leg wearing a heel isn't the best idea. She falls over with a yelp.

"Vernica!" You yell. You run around the desk to see the Modular on the ground, her right arm and head fallen off from the impact. "Are you okay."

Vernica's head groans as her body fumbles around blindly before placing her head back on her neck. "Wh-who are you?"

"Like I said, I'm your brother," you say as you pull up your shorts and show her your birthmark.
