You know, honestly? This is the least sociopathic or self-destructive idea for a prank you've had since finishing the size ray.
I mean, you know Tails feels...self-conscious about his height at times. Making him a few feet taller, even if he doesn't know, would probably help his self-confidence. Besides its not like your gonna make him 50 feet tall or anything. And if he does catch on you can just fess up and offer to return him to his original size! Win-win, no consequences!
