Turning his to stare in horror he sees the smaller figure of Tony Stark, face contorting in pain as the power of the infinity stones now integrated into his Iron Man suit.
"And... I... Am... Iron Man!" Tony grunted in pain as he snapped his fingers, flooding light in everyone's vision, as Thanos and his forces crumble to dust, an instance of Karma for what his counterpart had done 5 years prior.
However, just as Thanos entered within the soul stone when he committed this atrocity, so to would Tony Stark meet with the stones to change the universe.

The moment Strange refused to tell him if they were in the right timeline, Tony realised that he was going to have to sacrifice himself, it had occurred to him before, while a part of him hoped that Strange had simply been trying to save him, he knew that he had given the time stone to Thanos, that Tony had a role to play in Strange's master plan, and that he would likely be a sacrifice.
This did not stop him from internally raging, he didn't want to leave Pepper, he wanted to watch Morgan grow up, damn it he only just got Pete back, and now he had to abandon him! It wasn't fair damnnit!
"Indeed it isn't." He spun around to see Loki, and realised he was in some kind of void.
"What is this?" Tony asked. "Am I dead?"
"Not quite, not yet." He turns to see 5 other people; Jane Foster, two women he didn't know, one in military dress and a bald one dressed similar to Strange, Nebula and Natasha.
"Jane? Nat? Nebula?" Tony asked.
"No." Nebula said. "We are the Infinity Stones, we have merely borrowed their forms to allow us to talk with you, Anthony."
"So..." He pointed to each one, getting nod each time.
"You're the mind stone" Loki
"You're soul." Nat
"Reality?" Jane
"Power?" Nebula
"You're dressed like strange so I'm guessing Time?" The bald woman.
"And that leaves Space." The other woman,
"So what?" Tony asked, "You f**ked up Thanos and Bruce, and I am way less durable than them, so surely I am about to die."
"Indeed," Soul said, "The damage inflicted upon your body is fatal, and we cannot keep you going any further."
"Okay, so what is the point here?" Tony asked.
"You want more time, we can't give it to you here, but we can still give it to you." Time said.
"How?" Tony asked.
"We can send your mind and soul back in time, merging you with your past self, knowing what happened in this time line you will be able to act to better prepare for Thanos, and prevent him from destroying everything." Time said.
"Not just that, but you can prevent a lot more evil, a lot more suffering." Mind added. "Of course it will leave ripples, so things may be different."
Tony nodded. "Okay but I can't snap my fingers again."
Power laughed. "You know you don't have to right? We are actively using our powers now. We can send you back right now. the question is when?"
"When?" Tony asked.
"We need to figure out when to send you back. Now naturally you will act differently to how you were before your older self merges with your younger self. So ideally we need a time when this would be expected." Mind explained.
"I can think of three places." Time added. "When you found out that your parents are dead, since the tragedy sent you into a spiral, which will explain your change, when you are captured in Afghanistan, where no one who knows you is around and your circumstances will explain why you don't act like they might expect, or after you escape. Make your choice."
Tony frowned, each option had advantages;
When his parent's died, he didn't have that much of a reputation, beyond that of a playboy, he would be able to work without the taint of the Merchant of Death, but he also wouldn't have the educational prestige he did now. Plus he'd have more time
Afghanistan would give him a more established reputation, for better and worse, but he'd lose several years to work with. If we went for when he was captured he might be able to save Yinsen, but he'd definitely have to go through the torture again, going with his escape would escape that, but he'd leave Yinsen to die.
After a bit more thought, he chose to return to...   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
