Chapter #2

Grounded in the Backyard

    by: Dread Author IconMail Icon
You think that trying out your luck in the backyard is a better idea. Your idea is validated as you continue to shrink. If you continue waiting here, you might get too small. If you walk to the backyard where the family frequents, you have more chances to get someone's attention or get inside. You will just need to walk down the sidewalk leading to the porch and then across the sidewalk to the grass at the side of the house. From there, you would just be able to walk around the house to the backyard fence. Hopefully you can bypass it and then you would be able to post up near the sliding glass door.

With you plan set, you walk to the entrance of the porch but you are halted as you look down the stair steps that you pulled yourself up earlier. Getting down the steps is a dangerous challenge considering its like dropping down a two-storied building, doable but the risk of injury is high. You don't have a way to safely climb down because although the cement steps are rough for something smaller to climb like a rock wall, you are still much too big to be able to do something like that. Knowing that waiting will only make things more dangerous as the steps would grow in size, you decide to hang down the ledge of each step and then drop down to reduce the distance you are falling. Your legs still buckle from each drop but at least you make it down each step.

As you walk down the sidewalk, you lose more size. The trenches between sidewalk blocks are like ditches that you jump across. The tiny weeds that grow in these trenches are as talk as what regular grass would be and the actual grass surrounding the sidewalk is starting to get a little taller than you. You walk to the driveway and see the hulking mini-van even bigger than before. You make sure to walk towards the house a little to get in front of it first. Walking under the minivan would be faster, but if your friend's family happens to get in the van and reverse, you would be crushed inadvertently. You walk between the minivan and now-closed garage as you get to the grass at the edge of the driveway.

It's been a long walk, so you know what that means. You watch as the grass grows until you are about half its height. You are nervous to walk into the thicket because you are starting to approach the size of the bugs in it. You imagine the result of a bug bite is much more dire than normal size. The venom that many insects like ants have would be in greater quantities, the mandibles and proboscis can cause wounds like deep stabs with knives, and who wants to see normally tiny bugs being the size of poodles? You know that waiting by the grass will only cause the situation to get worse, so you travel into the dense vegetation.

You are able to move the grass about as you make your way through it. Every now and then you see grass ahead of you moving and you know to be still until whatever bug is inside walks past. Tiny bugs on the grass you move freaks you out as they are sometimes the size of your head. You try to ignore the more harmless bugs that you now share an environment with and keep trudging towards the fence. You are walking past the garbage can at the side of the house, placed at the side of the road on Wednesdays. Near the towering garbage can that juts into the sky like a skyscraper, you can make out the owl-sized house flies that are swarming as they wait for one of the giants in the house to take out the trash and put it in that can.

Eventually you make it to the fence and crossing it is no issue as there is plenty of space just under the fence for you to walk underneath it. You do just that and continue walking through the grass until you feel you are far enough in the backyard to get a good view of the whole thing. You shimmy up a blade of grass as it slightly flexes under your weight. You make it to the stop and due to the grass flexing, you have to balance yourself and stand up to get a good view above the other blades of grass in the thicket. You are able to make out the the majority of the backyard and try to decide where to go from here.

You see some towels laid out on top of the grass in the distance. Someone was tanning and might return, maybe you can work your way there? You can then get their attention for help. You can also head to the bushes as you see that you can probably climb them to reach an open window to the kitchen. You can get on the backyard cement patio and get to the sliding glass door and see if you can get inside that way.

You decide to go to..

You have the following choices:

1. The towels

*Noteb*
2. The bushes

3. The cement patio

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
