Chapter #5

Entering the alleyway

    by: sneakyk Author IconMail Icon
On a normal day, the nearby pedestrians and Pokemon would not seem threatening. A humble public sector worker tending to a Gogoat. A stressed-out office worker who isn't exactly in a position of power at the moment. A pair of innocent young girls enjoying a snack and chatting with one another. A dopey looking baby Pokemon half asleep against a tree. But at your scale, each of these giants poses a unique threat to you. Your mind runs through the sorts of encounters you might have with them, and none of them end well for you.

On a normal day, you wouldn't dream of turning into a random alley, especially not for shelter. You'd rather not get mugged, bitten by a rodent, or accused of suspicious behavior.

But today is not a normal day. That much is abundantly clear. And behaving otherwise would be simply walking to your death. So instead of blindly wandering through the streets, you veer towards the alleyway, hoping that nothing horrible awaits you. As you step into the alleyway, you are greeted with the unpleasant scent of a gargantuan dumpster. A few trash cans , soggy cardboard boxes, squares of plywood, and miscellanea rest against the walls, and puddles of murky water drench the lower parts of the alleyway's stony surface. There are ample places to hide here... if you can tolerate the ambient odor exuded by the garbage.

Not sensing any threats nearby, you begin to explore the alley, in search of potential hiding spots. The squares of plywood make for the most promising hiding spot. You approach one cautiously, worried that something else, be it a bug, a hostile 'tiny,' or a rodent, could be waiting for you. As you inspect the artificial alcove that is the gap between the plywood and the wall, you notice that the wood appears to show no signs of rot and bears no cobweb. Perhaps these were set here relatively recently, though for what purpose you cannot be sure. They're just as likely to be quickly and unceremoniously picked up. If you rest here you're liable to getting exposed in your sleep....or possibly even smashed between two of the wooden walls!

The cardboard boxes seem to have been left here for longer. Having been left out in the rain at least once, they look and smell of rot. Discarded documents might not be the first thing one things of when they visualize disgust, but the interior of these boxes would probably not be a tenable long term resting spot.

Food and water are also on your mind. You are not hungry yet, but you can't imagine yourself eating something from this dirty alleyway. The first thought that comes to mind is that you might try to search the streets or possibly even raid a bakery for food. It is not lost on you that this is precisely the lifestyle of a vermin. But what other choice do you have?

You scan the alley way for any more tantalizing hiding spots. The dumpster is not quite flush with the wall...and if you're willing to tolerate the scent, it might just be the most effective hiding spot. That is, if it doesn't somehow get pushed back against the wall. Then you'd be flattened instantly.

Taking one last effort to explore the alleyway, you make your way to the far end. On the other side of a trashcan you spot what appears to be a house that's actually appropriately sized for you. It certainly has an interesting aesthetic... it is made of a translucent green plastic material, and has a simple door. A single crouton rests in the middle of the house, and the house bears a hoop that extends from its roof. It is only a single room big.

Beyond the house, you notice the alleyway round a corner... but you are more than likely going to want to rest soon...
