Chapter #3Route 1: The simple country road by: sneakyk As you consider your options, you get the strangest feeling that no matter what you do, Pallet Town won't
be the safe haven it rightfully should be for someone as small as yourself. But...why? You instinctively turn your attention to the flower and press your hand against it. You're flooded with a series of strange memories of death. Did...did you die her?
No....that's impossible. But then again, would these odd visions be the only impossible thing that's happened to you today?
You briefly ponder over whether or not to take these premonitions seriously. If you just venture out blindly, you will likely get killed. Are you really going to pass up the chance to seek shelter in one of the buildings on a hunch? Ultimately, however, your fears get the best of you. Whether or not the premonitions were real, you just can't bring yourself to try to head to the lab or the nearby house. Instead, you decide to head your way north, towards Route 1. This is how many trainers begin their journey, and this might as well be how you begin yours. You arrive at the northern edge of town and gaze with fear at the grass patch immediately before you. This is a sure way to escape from the town, but at what cost?
Route 1, the only land-route to and from Pallet Town. The path is essentially a narrow well-maintained dirt road that snakes its way up an incline, with small ledges, rows of trees, and grasspatches breaking the path up here or there. Because the Oak Institute offers a wide variety of carefully curated 'starter Pokemon,' children interested in beginning their careers as Pokemon Trainers are often shepherded to the Institute to get their first Pokemon. As such, Route 1 is an important and memorable road. It also happens to be a geographic choke point. Simply put, if you are to leave Pallet Town on foot, you must first travel down this path.
The route's wildlife consists almost entirely of low level normal type Pokemon, though there are a few exceptions should one look hard enough. As the route directly adjoins Pallet Town and Viridian City, the place is frequented by a mix of gradeschool-aged children and league hopefuls doing errands for the Institute. The Route's dirt path will likely leave you safe from Pokemon, but exposed to humans. The grass patches, some of which cannot by bypassed, would act as clear visual cover from the humans, but this would also leave you exposed to attacks from the Pokemon lurking within.
Before you can get to this road, however, you must first cross the grass patch immediately before you. You fearfully approach the grass patch, uncertain of the dangers that might lurk within. This will be your first foray into tall grass at your current height...and it may just prove to be your last. As you remain paralyzed in indecision, you hear the sound of wings beating against the air overhead. You turn your head northwards and manage to spot a Pidgey sitting standing perched upon a tree, gazing down at you with scrutiny and perhaps...hunger. Oh no! You haven't even set foot i the route and a wild Pokemon is already plotting to claim you as prey!
You gaze back at the creature in silent fear, uncertain of just how much a threat it could pose to you. It's a low level unevolved Pokemon, and you're a human, no matter how small you are. Surely it wouldn't dare to attack you, and even if it does, you should be able to defend yourself....right? Looking around, you spot a twig a few feet off to the east. You should be able to get to it before the Pidgey gets to you, but going for it also means you won't be able to hide in the grass or retreat back towards the buildings of the town....
