Abby knew Luke liked the idea of shrinking. He had written a couple of stories about people who had shrunk around unaware giants and giantess’. In his photography and photoshop class, he created a collage where he was tiny, almost being crushed under the barefoot of his sister. Luke would definitely be interested in the invitation. He might even let Abby test it on him. She texted Luke to see if he would want to hang out. He said yes and invited her to his house.
Abby pocketed the shrink ray and hopped on her bike. It only took about five minutes to reach his house. Abby leaned her bike up against the tree in the front yard and rang the doorbell. A moment later, it was opened by his 13-year-old sister. “Hi Maddie, is Luke home?” asked Abby, knowing the answer.
Maddie turned and bellowed up the stairs. “Luke, your girlfriend is here!”
Abby felt her cheeks go red. Luke was also flushed we he came out of his room. Glaring at Maddie, he said, “Why do you have to be so annoying. You know that it is possible for a boy and girl just to be friends.” She gave him a skeptical look. Then burped right in his face as he walked by. Luke shoved her hard. “Please excuse my sister. She just likes to be a pest.” Behind his back, she stuck her tongue out at him before heading up the stairs.
“Come on in!” Luke lead Abby up to his room, which totally suited him. It was nerdy and yet well organized. He had several bookshelves with Legos, comic book collectibles, and Pop Funko’s of all his favorite fictional characters. Luke’s bed was elevated, which left room for two cozy chairs facing a TV.
Abby sat down. “I have something really cool to show you. It is my grandpa’s latest intention.” She pulled out the shrink ray from her pocket.
“What is it?” asked Luke, interested. Abby’s grandpa always made crazy and cool things.
“This, my friend, is a shrink ray,” Abby said. Luke’s mouth opened in surprise. “Here, let me show you.” After adjusting the settings, Abby fired it at the bean bag that served as a footrest or third chair when all three friends were hanging out. Luke watched in amazement as it shrunk before his eyes. It was now the size of a hacky sack.
Luke bent over and picked up the shrunken bean bag. “This is so cool! I can’t believe that it is real.” Abby then returned it to normal size. “Soooo, does the shrink ray work on humans?”
“Well, we haven’t done any tests, but we assume so. It is definitely safe for other living organisms,” replied Abby. She explained some of the tests they had done, including that objects seemed to be more durable when shrunk.
“I will be your human guinea pig,” blurted Luke. “Shrink me.” Abby pretend to hesitate, not wanting him to know how eager she was to shrink him. “Come on; it seems perfectly safe. Plus, I am willing to take on some risk.”
“Well, if you are sure,” Abby said. Luke nodded vigorously. “Okay, I will do it. The only question is roughly what size do you want to be? I was thinking somewhere between one and three inches.”
“I want to be...
