As the dust settled on the wizarding world and both magicians and muggles try to get back to a sense of normalcy, Hermione Granger headed back to Hogwarts. She didn't have to, of course. Hermione had always been a most remarkable young witch. She could have gone to work immediately for the Ministry of Magic. There was no doubt that in two or three decades, Hermione would be the Minister of Magic.
Right now, though, Hermione didn't want to be involved in the grand scheme of rebuilding. She just wanted one last year at Hogwarts. There she could concentrate on her studies and help Hogwarts rebuild.
Hermione also needed to get a little space between her and Ron. The intensity of the days leading up to the final confrontation between the Order of the Phoenix and the Snake Eaters had led to a certain intensity in her burgeoning romance with Ron. But now that things had settled down, Hermione was having second thoughts about Ron.
Well, Ron would be busy with his brother George in getting their business up and running. The time apart would let the young witch to get her thoughts together.
As a seventh year student, Hermione had her own private sleeping quarters, though she shared a study and bath with three other seventh years: Luna Lovegood, Cho Chang and Padma Patil.
It was in that study that Hermione would find herself the victim of the school's shrinking curse.
