Chapter #3

Sam 'The Machine'

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
Waterfront City, one of the most strangest places on Earth. Everyone born here becomes extraordinary in one way or another. No one really talks about it, especially not to any outsiders. There are evil people out there who would make use of some of our citizens to advance their own selfish agendas; we can't let that happen. That is where the freedom fighters come in like the Problem Child Gang.

I am Sam 'The Machine'. I have what I call Telemechanics, the ability to talk to and control any machine and even the city itself. It is a very rare ability; I have yet to meet anyone with a power even similar to my own. I am unique and I use my power to keep evil people from taking advantage of our fellow citizens....

I sighed, looking up from my journal. The cell phone Geo, the leader of our group, had given me was ringing. As we had agreed upon, I answered on the third ring.

"Talk to me." flatly, I said.

"We have a situation." Dryly, Geo said. "The Nostalgia Museum has been hit by Sykes and his merry men. When can you be ready?"

"I am ready now." Calmly, I said.

After ending the call, I made certain the house was locked up tight then headed down to the basement. I had the advantage of being an only child of a single mother who was gone for days to weeks at a time working for some 'hush- hush' company in town somewhere. Of course, I was curious what this company was but I did not wish to pry and the pay it brought in was nothing to sneeze at.

Inside the basement, I screwed in an old fuse that was loose and a secret door in the wall opened. After I had stepped through, the fuse unscrewed on a spring system, closing the door behind me. I spoke in a series of clicks, beeps and whines and the dark hall beyond the door lit up. I then followed it to a series of underground roads going is all directions where the Beast was waiting. It was a 1980 GMC Vandura that I had literally rebuilt from the chassis up. It had a powerful engine I had designed myself; it had the torque of a modern locomotive. It's hull had armor like a tank and the interior was roomy enough to comfortably seat six. I had added a sun roof in case we had to jump in from above. Best of all, it was water fueled. How or why it worked was my secret.

"Hello, old friend." Smiling, I said.

The Beast replied by starting with a satisfying roar...
