Chapter #11Before They Were Legends, They Were Just Kids. by: Wolfboy.com 2 ![Author Icon](https://images.Writing.Com/imgs/writing.com/writers/costumicons/ps-icon-regular-10.gif) "Hey Joey." said Yugi Moto to his friend siting across his desk "Earth to Joey! Hey are you in there? It's your turn."
Joey Wheeler hesitated to make his move. After all, he had been struggling to beat his short friend for hours, but nothing he did worked.
"Aw, isn't he cute when he's thinking." Tristan Taylor teased as he put his friend in an playful headlock.
"Knock it Tristan, I'm trying to win here!" Joey said with annoyance as he pushed the tall young man off him.
Tea Gardner giggled "Oh, is that what you're trying to do? Doesn't seem like it from where I'm standing."
Joey growled from all his friends teasing him. "Oh yeah?! Well how's about I play this!" he exclaimed as he placed Kagemusha of the Blue Flame on the Duel Mate in Attack Mode. "How'd you like that Yugi? Pretty good move huh?"
Kagemusha of the Blue Flame ATK: 800
"Yep. Pretty good move, but not good enough." Yugi said with a cheerful smile as he placed Blackland Fire Dragon in Attack Mode.
Blackland Fire Dragon ATK: 1500
"Huh?!" Joey's widened in shock as Yugi's monster easily beat his and wiped out the rest of his Life Points. "Oh come on!"
"So Syrus, what's the score now?" Tea asked a young boy about Yugi's height with teal colored hair, grey eyes and little reading glasses.
"That match makes it..20 to 0, in Yugi's favor." Syrus answered as he kept score in his notebook.
"Man Joey, you really stink at this game." Tristan teased.
"Well to be fair, Yugi is a bit of an expert. So it makes sense that he would win." Tea pointed out.
Yugi rubbed the back of he's head bashfully "I wouldn't call myself an expert. After all, Syrus has beaten me quite a few times." he said modestly.
"He has?!" Joey, Tristan and Tea all shouted in disbelief, as they've never seen Syrus duel. They didn't even know that he could duel.
"Yeah. We practice against each other all the time at home. Trust me he's pretty good."
Syrus blushed at the praise "Well, you beaten me just as many times Yugi." he reminded his friend, and roommate.
"Man Sy, you've been holding out on us! I've been trying to beat Yugi since forever. And you're telling me you can? This I got to see!" Joey said excitedly as he got up from his seat and gestured for Syrus to take it.
"Yeah, let's see you're skills in action Syrus!" Tristan encouraged.
"Come on Sy, show us what you've got." Tea said with an inviting smile.
More and more of his classmates encouraged the shy young man to show what he was capable of. Normally this would've put his anxiety into high gear, for more reasons than one. But this time, he found himself getting excited. "Alright Yugi, let's go!" Syrus stated with surprising confidence as he took the seat across from Yugi, and pulled out his Deck.
"Alright, it's time to duel!" Yugi said eagerly as he shuffled his Deck.
Nearly the entire class was on the edge of their seats as Yugi and Syrus entered an intense back and forth match. Both summoning monsters, attacking and defending, casting spells, laying out traps, they matched each other blow for blow. It was coming down to the wire, as both Duelists now only had 100 Life Points left. And this next move would decide who's the winner.
*RING*
Or at least it would've, if the final bell didn't ring first.
"AWW!!" the entire class shouted in disappointment.
"I guess, that makes this match a draw." Yugi said, also disappointed, as he rearranged his cards.
"Aw man, I almost had you there." Syrus pouted "I would've broken our tie."
"Well, there's always next time right?" Yugi asked optimistically as he sling his backpack over his shoulder.
"Man Sy, you really have been holding out on us!" Joey cheered as he gave the short Duelist a brotherly rub on the head. "I've never seen anyone but Yugi pull off moves like that!"
"Where did you learn how to play like that?" Tea asked, very curious.
Syrus was silent for a moment, as he thought of the best way to answer. "Well, mostly from Yugi and his grandpa. They've been teaching me everything I know since they took me in."
Yugi's face had a nostalgic expression as he thought back to the time he first met Syrus. "Man, has it really been a year already?" he asked himself out loud.
"Yeah, crazy to think about isn't it." Syrus answered with a similar expression "I still can't thank you and your grandpa enough for taking me off the streets."
Yugi gave him a genuine smile as he said "And I keep telling you, that there's no need to thank us. You've become like a brother to me Syrus, and the bond we now share is something I'll always treasure."
Syrus smiled back at Yugi with moved tears starting to well in his eyes. He brought Yugi into a warm hug, which was happily returned. "So will I Yugi." he said with all his heart.
Joey and Tristan were also tearing up from all the warm feels. "Oh come here you two!" they said as they dragged the two shortstacks into a group hug.
"Hey! Make room for me!" Tea said as she piled into group, not wanting to be left out.
After a long and wholesome group hug, the friends separated and Yugi just had an idea. "You know Syrus, we could mark this day as something of a birthday. Since we still don't know you're actual birthday. And we can use it as an excuse to celebrate."
"Yeah! That sounds like a great idea!" Joey agreed, always up for a good time. "Who knows, if we party hard enough it'll jog your memory Sy."
"And maybe I'll finally be able to convince grandpa to show us his super rare card he's got."
Little did any of them know, but that last comment from Yugi caught the ears of one Seto Kaiba as he was just about to leave the classroom. "Rare card? Could it be possible?" he thought curiously.
(On The Way To The Game Shop)
As the group of friends walked together to visit The Game Shop, Tea looked over to Syrus and asked "I hope you don't mind me asking Syrus, but have you remembered anything of your old life yet?"
Syrus was silent again for a moment as he thought of an answer... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
