Chapter #5

The alien pulls out a device

    by: JR Author IconMail Icon
The alien’s movements were slow, deliberate. It extended one long, spindly arm toward its side, where a faint, metallic hum emanated from the air around its wrist. Elena watched, both entranced and apprehensive, as the alien produced a small, spherical device. The object was about the size of a grapefruit, with smooth, polished edges that caught the moonlight, its surface rippling with strange symbols—like liquid metal folding over itself.

The device hovered gently in its grasp before the alien turned it toward Elena, holding it out with an air of caution, yet with an unmistakable intent. The creature’s large, dark eyes shifted between her and the object in its hands, and then, with a soft mechanical whir, it activated the device.

A beam of soft, blue light shot from the sphere, enveloping Elena’s body from head to toe. She stiffened, the sensation almost like a faint electrical current brushing across her skin, but there was no pain, only a strange, tingling warmth. Her breath hitched as the light lingered, probing, scanning her. It felt as if every cell in her body were being touched, examined—like she was being read, a book with pages turned too fast to understand.

But before she could make sense of the sensation, the alien abruptly pulled the device back, a sharp, almost mechanical gesture that startled her.

For a brief moment, Elena was confused—had it scanned her? Had it understood her somehow?

Then the alien did something even stranger.

It held the device up to its own chest. The symbols on the device flickered with an eerie glow, and the air around the alien hummed as the beam turned inward. The alien’s body stiffened for a brief second as the scanner traced across its long, lean frame, mapping its form. Elena’s heart skipped a beat—what was it doing? Was the alien... scanning itself?

A sudden, unnatural pull filled the air.

The device started to hum louder, its glow intensifying. A crackling noise echoed through the stillness of the forest, and Elena felt a strange force in the air. Before she could react, the alien’s body jerked upward, its feet lifting off the ground as though gravity had lost its hold. The device vibrated in the air, drawing the alien toward it like a magnet.

In a split second, the creature was sucked into the device, vanishing with an unsettling, almost effortless swiftness, as if it had been absorbed by the very air itself. The device now hovered where the alien had stood just moments before, still pulsing with energy. The forest seemed to hold its breath.

Then, without warning, a brilliant beam shot from the floating device. It was bright—too bright. The air crackled, and Elena’s eyes widened, a sharp pain suddenly slicing through her head. The beam slammed into her forehead, a burning sensation that felt like fire spreading through her skull, as though her very mind was being pulled and stretched by an unseen force.

She gasped, unable to comprehend what was happening, as the beam seemed to dig deeper, forcing her to her knees. Her body was no longer her own—her limbs shook violently, uncontrollably, like a puppet with tangled strings. The forest around her spun, her vision blurring, and the pain intensified.

“Elena…” The name whispered through her mind, but it wasn’t her voice—it was the voice of the alien, faint and distant, and yet somehow familiar. It echoed in her skull, reverberating through her senses. It knows me... it knows me…

Her head spun faster, the world twisting out of focus. The glowing beam pushed deeper into her consciousness, and everything around her—her body, her thoughts, the ground beneath her—began to fade.

Her knees gave out, and the last thing she remembered was the ground rushing toward her before everything went black.

When Elena’s body collapsed to the forest floor, there was no sign of the alien, no sign of the device, only the still, silent night. The only thing that remained was the faintest hum, a whisper in the air, as though something—someone—was still watching.
