“Simple task for day one, Hunter.” Brigitte explained, crossing her powerful arms in front of her chest. “I need you to walk the beach, up and down. It’s a two mile stretch that comprises Sanderson Beach…so it’ll take a while for someone of your size.”
You nodded, but were a little confused. “I can do that. Any particular reason?”
Brigitte smiled. “Of course, dude. I need you to help anyone who might be in need. Maybe someone is lost? Maybe someone lost someTHING? Maybe a kid wants a friend to play with for an hour? Maybe someone wants a quick lesson in proper swimming postures?” Brigitte shrugged casually. “It could really be anything. You never know.”
“Ah, okay. Thanks for the heads up!” You said. You were about to turn and end the conversation when your new boss held up her hand.
“Wait! One catch first, man.” She sat back down and leaned forward in her chair, steepling her fingers. “I need to hear you tell me exactly who you helped and what you did for them at the end of today’s shift. If you didn’t help out at least one person…” She made a cutting motion with her hand across her throat. “…the deal’s off. Got it?”
The slightest bit nervous, you nodded anyway. “O-of course! Got it!”
“Alright then!” Brigitte beamed, then turned her expression on Quinn. “Quinn, girl, go ahead out. Drop Hunter off when you make it to the middle tower. He’s on his own from there.”
Quinn dipped her head almost imperceptibly. “Of course. See you later.” With that, your black-haired roommate turned on her heel and strode out of the door. You clung to her thumb to avoid falling off her palm, especially as the flat pavement gave way to the sandy dunes of Sanderson Beach.
The sun was beating down like crazy today, and the temperature was quite sweltering. Thankfully, you’d lathered up in a bit of sunscreen earlier, and because of your small size, the slightest breeze felt like a storming wind. Thus, you kept cool relatively easily. Still, you were surprised how packed the beach was for still being before noon. Apparently, everyone else was willing to brave the weather for a nice and relaxing day.
When Quinn reached the base of the middle tower, she gently lowered you to the ground. With relief, you found the sand to be just firm enough to hold your weight without you sinking in. It was still an overwhelming experience to look out from the ground all around the beach. It was like a vast desert wonderland…or perhaps wasteland was the better term.
Glancing up at Quinn, you shielded your eyes from the sun and gave her a thumbs up. Surprisingly, Quinn returned your thumbs up, before sliding on sunglasses and scaling the ladder up to the top of the middle lifeguard tower. You were momentarily distracted (for the third time in less than an hour) by the sight of Quinn’s magnificently shapely butt bounce as she climbed the ladder, and then you began walking.
Though it wasn’t much more than a speck in the distance, you could make out the right tower. If you had to guess, it was a little less than a mile away. Once reaching that tower, your plan was to double back, pass the middle tower, and then hit the left tower. You would then have completed one and a half laps across the beach, and taking your size into account, it would probably be time to go home by then. Hopefully you would have helped at least one person by then, and maybe even more.
Your first five minutes of walking were simple and easy. Because of your size, walking across the sand was more like walking on normal ground, just with a few small hills and valleys every so often. It wasn’t too bad, all things considered, though it was a little disheartening to turn around and see the comparably small distance you’d covered from the middle tower in that time. Still, your whole life had prepared you for this, and you had more than enough stamina and endurance to keep up a good pace.
The first troubling encounter happened after fifteen minutes. You had been walking in the direction of a woman who seemed nervous, and she was glancing around. Inferring that she was in need of a lifeguard such as yourself, you doubled your speed towards the woman, growing closer by the second. However, this single-minded drive to reach the woman had the obvious downside of blinding you to everything else in your peripheral.
As such, you were caught completely off guard when a young girl came sprinting by, laughing and giggling. Like a truck slamming into you, the little girl’s foot crashed down onto you, her petite heel digging into your body. In the blink of an eye, you were crushed flat. The girl’s weight also indented the sand around your body, leaving a curved imprint in the ground. When she took another step and raced off, you were left stuck to the ground by the pressure, though thankfully not too crushed.
That was only slightly relieving, as a second later, the girl’s titanic mother strolled above you, her giant feet on either side of you. She was calling out to her daughter in an amused tone, warning her to slow down. While you were still reforming, the mother, never once looking down, rolled her eyes at her daughter’s antics and then unfurled a towel from her bag. She then began to spread the towel out…directly over you.
Spurred on by this horrifying sight, you focused all your efforts and popped back into 3D, but you were a millisecond too late. The towel, a large, fluffy thing decorated in flower patterns, descending, falling over all of the ground around you like a veil from above. It touched the sand, forcing you onto your stomach, but thankfully not squishing you. You were still able to crawl along your stomach.
And, crawl you did. You dashed madly along the coarse sands, scrambling like a demon-possessed crab. You had no idea where you were going in the darkness, but finally a sliver of light revealed itself. Pushing out into the light, you popped out from under the towel, and basked in the sunlight. A moment of reflection revealed that you had lost your shirt, probably when scrambling under the towel. It must’ve ripped off. At least you still had your red swim trunks.
Looking back, you saw the woman who had inadvertently thrown such a wrench into your day settle down onto her towel and pull out a novel to read. Looking away from her, you glumly saw the woman you had been intending to help all along graciously receiving aid from Quinn, of all people. In reality, you were still no more than fifty yards from the middle tower, and so your roommate had taken it upon herself to help out the nervous woman. She had no clue she’d robbed you of your goal.
She also had no clue that you were so close, a fact evidenced by how close she came to stomping on you as she walked back towards the tower. You had tried to call out to her, only for your voice to be drowned out by a cawing seagull. As such, you had dove to the side to avoid her powerful stride, and watched as she sauntered on by, presumably off to help someone else in need.
It was beginning to dawn on you that perhaps signing on to be a lifeguard was a bad idea, but you were far from ready to throw in the towel yet. You had to prove yourself to Brigitte and Quinn that you were capable of doing this. You had to prove to YOURSELF that you were a strong and dependable tiny that people could rely on.
You walked for another thirty minutes, never once giving up on scanning your surroundings for people in need or threats to your safety. Twice more you spotted someone who looked like they could use assistance, but after having to dodge someone stepping on you, found that Quinn had made it to them first. It was beginning to tick you off, but you were angrier at fate for being cruel than your roommate for just doing her job.
Eventually, you came upon a group of college-aged girls rounding up enough volunteers to start a volleyball game. None of them looked like they needed help, so you kept walking, but you were quite distracted by just how beautiful the girls were, and how revealing their swimsuits were too. There were seven gorgeous giantesses gathered on the sandy court by the volleyball net, and they seemed to be looking for one more to join them.
It was then that you heard pounding footsteps coming from behind you. Eyes widening in panic, you whirled around to face another girl who was running towards you at top speed. She had an excited expression on her face, and her eyes were locked fully on the volleyball group behind you. You realized that she was probably going to join them as their eighth player. You also realized how oblivious this girl was to your existence, and how close her pounding feet were getting.
Tensing up in a panic, you willed yourself to dodge out of the way of her slamming feet and find safety. How successful are you?
