The next few days were hectic, to say the least. Kyle returned home immediately after learning what had happened. My folks informed our family and close friends of the changes as well.
At the same time, they also decided that I would be re-enrolled in Kindergarten. I tried to protest, saying that I was only a 5-year-old girl physically. Still, they insisted High School wasn’t an appropriate environment for someone my age. Then, when I tried to bring up that Josie was in the same position, they simply said that Josie’s situation was being handled.
During this time, I discovered the two people I thought were my friends, Jake Crowley and Micah Bloom, were anything but. They’d come by the house the morning after the accident to see how I was doing; they took one look at me and gave me the metaphorical finger before walking out the door.
Thankfully, my extended family was far more understanding and supportive of the situation. My Aunt Marley was already discussing the possibility of playdates with me and my 6-year-old cousin Samantha.
There was one more development - my new legal name is Claire Burdett. I guess my folks decided that Clay wasn’t an appropriate name for a little girl, so they had it legally changed with help from Radeon. At the same time, Josie's name was changed to Joseph; although I'm told he preferred being called Joey.
