Chapter #5

Returning home.

"As Rennie discovered for herself," Dr. Olkaela said, "caffeine is an intoxicant to Metaturians. So don't let her drink any more, at least until she is an adult."

The way I was feeling, I was in no hurry to repeat this experience, but Mom and Dad promised to keep an eye on what I drank in the future. "How about alcohol?"

"It's harmless to us. She'll be able to handle liquor as if it were water."

"Should we watch out for anything else?"

"Your inexpensive milk chocolate is a mood elevator for us. If she's in a low mood, and there's a happy occasion about to happen, a chocolate bar will have her celebrating. But don't let her have any before sad movies or funerals, or people will wonder why she's sitting there with a smile on her face."

"Duly noted."

"As for premium dark chocolate, well,... that's not something for one your daughter's age, so keep it away from her, as well."

"Thank you, Doctor. Can Rennie come home now?"

"Well, she could be violently ill at any time, and she'll wake up tomorrow with grellan-gex, or 'hangover,' as you call it. But I suppose that she can recover at home. Unless you'd rather be here for it... ?"

I shook my head. "I do' wanna shpen' my birfday inna hoshpital."

"Oh. Well, happy birthday, Rennie. I'm sorry you won't feel like celebrating."

******************************

I threw up once while I was getting ready, again on the way home, and once more at home. With my stomach so upset, Mom and Dad didn't dare give me any chocolate, even though it might have helped my mood. My friends, human and Metaturian, decided to put off my party until tomorrow. Mom also said that Mrs. Edozoik would come tomorrow, too, so I could recover from being drunk.

Fine by me. Being drunk didn't bother me half as much as the fact that I was no longer human.
