“So… your comment about the portion sizes?”
“I was kind of leading into the whole ‘I got fat’ thing for you.”
“Your solution for me, in this problem, is… to get fat.”
“Well not get fat necessarily, but it’s what worked for me.”
Phoebe accentuated her stance on the matter with a firm pat of her stomach. It rippled crest-down, visible through her tight blouse that hugged every roll and fold that made up her mountainous physique. Even her jowls swayed slightly with the motion, a happy smile painted on like an afterthought between two overly appled cheeks.
“But… I don’t want to get fat.” Erin groused, “I worked hard to get where I am today, and besides… I don’t know if…”
Another pause.
“Aren’t people, you know, more intimidated by people they think are… you know… attractive?”
“Are you seriously going to sit across from this table and tell me you’re not at least twenty-five percent attracted to me right now?”
Another, longer and more uncomfortable pause as Erin silently evaluated Phoebe’s point.
“Look, you don’t have to get fat. You can do whatever you want.” Phoebe raised her hands from the table, in effect removing herself from the matter, “But I’m telling you what worked for me—I’m big, I’m bold, and I’m scary as hell. People listen to me, and I’m automatically the biggest person in the room figuratively and literally.”
Erin clicked her tongue contemplatively.
“Besides, it’s nice not to have to worry about your figure.” Phoebe smiled more softly, bouncing her hands on her stomach playfully, “Chances are you’ll get a little office bod at some point anyway—why put it off when you can go the other way with it and use it to your advantage?”
As much as she didn’t want to think that Phoebe had a point, she’d proven herself plenty of times over the years to be one of the most savvy women in the corporate world. All of her experience had helped Erin more times than she could count, and if she said that this would help her out in the long run, she didn’t have many reasons not to believe her…
She took a deep breath, and pictured herself at the gym. Sweaty, tired, but fulfilled. The thrill of mounting another lap or session had slowly dulled as she’d hit her plateau. She liked working out though, it gave her a way to channel the aggression that had carried her throughout her life into something productive. Not going to the gym every few days felt… weird. Even just to think about.
But, if it would help her career...
“So… you want to order dessert?” Phoebe asked with a piqued golden eyebrow, “Or should I?”
Erin sighed in defeat.
Ugh… goodbye body.
