"Awww," Cat whimpered softly, "but I worked so hard on them. Are you sure ya don't wanna try just a little?"
After three months of calorific Wednesdays, Caleb knew exactly how this would go. One bite would quickly turn into two; "just a little" would turn into "a whole damn lot". Caleb's inability to say 'no' to Cat had created a vicious cycle, with a plumper Caleb the result. Caleb was sure he'd put on at least fifty pounds since meeting Cat - none of his old pants fit, ditto most of of his shirts, and he was sure he must be nearly the big 3-0-0 by now.
After last Wednesday, he had resolved he would say 'no' when Cat tempted him. He'd try to let her down easy, tell her he too was 'trying to slim down a bit' - the line she'd used the first day they met, and which she had kept repeating, even though he could see no evidence of anything beyond 'trying'.
But would his 'trying' be any better than hers?
Caleb was resolved that this week - THIS week - he could and would finally say no.
He started with the explanation.
"Sorry Cat, I am going to pass on them."
"But why?" Cat pouted.
"Well," Caleb began more hesitantly than he'd wanted, "it's, well, like you said, I'm trying to slim down a bit and..."
Cat cut him off. "You don't need to slim down - you're not big at all!"
"... I've put on some pounds over the last few months and I'm convinced I must be getting close to 300 pounds, and I know it's probably TMI, but that's just too big for me to be."
