This choice: Go with a Will/Andrew Mask. • Go Back...Chapter #9Go with a Will/Andrew Mask. by: Seuzz (Text by Gimlet )
"Yeah, that'd... that... Will, you have absolutely no idea, do you? This thing is not worth a thousand bucks!"
You sigh.
"I know, millions right? But if I go to some research lab they're gonna lock me in a cell so I can't tell anyone about it and the CIA will suddenly have a new toy. Come on, I'm not that dumb! Besides I want to help out my friends."
Andrew smiles and nods, then goes to remove the Mask as you showed him.
"WAIT!" you cry, "Sit down for gods sake first. Your legs won't work after, plus taking it off'll knock you out again anyways. Best to sit or lay down while you take it on or off."
"Gotcha." he says, sits back down, utters the phrase three times, and rips the Mask off. "oooooAaaaahhhhhhssshit!" he groans, and you blink. He stayed awake! The first time he used the Mask and he's getting used to it quicker than you! Damn! Shaking off the jealousy you wave the blank mask in front of him.
"This takes the image by melting into your face... it's OK! It just kind of merges, you saw it with me right? Anyway, it melts in and... I guess takes an image of your body. Takes a while. Ten, fifteen minutes tops. Then the Mask emerges again and a few moments later the guy being 'scanned' wakes up. Bingo recorded body. The Mask won't work then so you can keep recording images. When you 'fix' it you can't record images any more. Then anyone who wears the Mask becomes that image. Take a look in the surface of my brother's Mask."
Andrew shakes some of the fog from his brain and peers into the Mask.
"Damn! Looks like a hologram or something, but that's him alright."
"Yep, that way we can get an idea of what the finished body will look like before we fix it. If the combination of you and me isn't to your liking we can keep adding people to the Mask, slightly changing it's features till it's right. Once fixed though you can't change it at all. Make sure it's what you want before we finish. You'll have to live with it."
Andrew looks askance at you. "You? Giving me Life Lessons? Now this is a role reversal!" You both laugh at that, but soon Andrew is staring down at the blank Mask.
"Ready?" you say. "Well me first I guess."
You lay back and press the blank Mask to your face. You make a real effort to stay awake, despite the discomfort, but knowing what's happening doesn't help. A short time later you wake groggily to see Andrew turning the Mask over in his hands.
"Yep, your image alright. I was waiting for you to wake up before I did me."
Without waiting for you to respond he presses the Mask to his face as well. Just like with your brother you watch as it melts in and you are relieved to find that Andrew faints dead away this time. Maybe 'scanning' always knocks you unconscious? Just using the Mask is different you guess, and you can resist the fainting if you try hard enough. When the Mask emerges you study the face within. It's definitely not you or Andrew but it is a tiny bit like both of you. You're not sure it's half way between you, but it's definitely someone new.
"Oooh, that's gonna be a bitch!" Andrew mutters waking up slowly.
"If it's any consolation, I think it's designed to knock out whoever it scans. Using a finished Mask is a different story," you say it like it's obvious, despite you only having worked it out yourself a moment ago. "If you use the finished Mask regularly I'm sure you can eventually do it without a twinge."
"Let me see." he says, motioning to the Mask.
You toss it to him and he peers into it.
"I definitely like it!" he says. "Looks a bit like Uncle Louis, without the beard... and a lot younger." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
