A top-secret device is found by one of our characters. It seems to have been packed for secure transport, along with instructions on its use. It is a small metallic cylindrical device, like a laser pointer, labeled "Super Genital Swapper," with "SGS" engraved along its side.
According to the included instructions, it is a device designed for manipulating human relationships for the purposes of corporate espionage, among other uses. The way it does this is by swapping genitals between any two people that it gets pointed at in succession.
However, swapping genitals is only the physical "anchor" for the real purpose, which is to swap relationships between people. Any relationship with a bearing on the swapped genitals is included in the swap, meaning romantic and sexual relationships, as well as parentage. For example, if the mother of a child is swapped with someone else, that person becomes the mother of her children. But if her children are swapped with anyone, they are still her children because their genitals are not directly relevant to their relationship.
Sexual preference is also swapped with the genitals in order to facilitate the swapped relationships but will still include the original romantic relationships, if any are present. For instance, a heterosexual couple swapped with each other will swap general sexual preferences, but will remain attracted to each other even though their partners still look like their original selves (apart from their privates).
Oddly, apart from the genitals, preferences, and relationships, everything else remains unswapped. Clothing, identity, gender, names, fashion sense, etc., all remain completely untouched. As such, in theory it is feasible for a man with a male identity and pronouns to be considered someone's mother, if swapped with a mother. Or a woman can be considered someone's boyfriend, while still being considered a woman.
In addition, all targets are unaware of the swaps by default. The user of the device is always aware of all swaps that they cause, and they can make one or both targets aware of the swaps that they are subject to. However, a user of the device won't be aware of swaps made by others using the device, and targets made aware of their own swaps will not be aware of any swaps not involving themselves.
Swaps do not have a limited duration and will remain in place indefinitely, until swapped back. The device does not have a reset button; if swaps are to be reversed, they must be reversed manually by targeting both parties as before. However, the targets do not need to be in the same location to be swapped, and there is no time limit between selecting the first target and selecting the second target.
