The town where Leon started his journey was small and lacked a Pokemon Professor, but acquiring a trainer license was relatively easy. All he needed to do was a test, which he did, and he could receive his Pokedex, PokeBalls, and starter.
The Pokedex was an app, which can be used by anyone, but a high end satellite smartphone was recommended for trainers, which he received from his mother. The PokeBalls were cheap, and easy to come by. The starter, on the other hand, would take a while to arrive, and he had no option but to wait.
Fortunately, during his time waiting, Leon found a Mimikyu near an abandoned house at the edge of town, a very clichê situation, and they became close friends. By the time he informed Mimikyu that he was going to be a trainer, the little Ghost Fairy expressed the desire to go with him as his starter.
No longer needing to wait for a starter, Leon departed, and he spent the rest of the month training with Mimikyu as they made their way to the next town.
