Jake Long is a young Chinese-American teenage boy living in Manhattan in New York City, with a typical laidback teenage skateboarder personality for children his age. He lives with his parents, Jonathan and Susan Luong-Long, his younger sister, Hayley Kay Long, and hangs out with his two best friends: the slow-minded but loyal Arthur P. "Spud" Spudinski, and the blunt but logical Trixie Carter. He has a crush on the popular girl, Rose, who he hopelessly tries to impress
But Jake Long has a secret double life: He is the American Dragon, and the grandson of Luong Lao Shi, the former Chinese Dragon, accompanied by his talking 600 year-old Shar Pei dog, Fu Dog. He is the owner of an electronics store on Canal Street and spends his time (attempting to) train Jake as the American Dragon, which sometimes does more damage than progress. As a dragon, Jake must contend with various magical creatures and battle against many villains, including the Huntsman and his Huntsclan, and the Dark Dragon.
