The Legend of Zelda series is one of Nintendo’s staple series that’s broadened it’s own horizons since the original game was released in the early 1980’s.
The original Legend of Zelda features a top-down view of the game’s iconic hero, Link, as he explores the overworld of Hyrule and dungeons to rescue the fair Princess Zelda from the clutches of Ganon by restoring the Triforce of Wisdom. The game became such a huge success that Nintendo launched the titular game franchise that video game fans know and love, with iconic releases such as A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Breath of the Wild not only driving the franchise to success, but also becoming significant milestones in the development of video games as a whole.
Decades after the launch of the first Legend of Zelda game, Nintendo released an official timeline in their book, Hyrule Historia, explaining the chronological order of the game series, from Hyrule’s foundation in Skyward Sword to the timelines diverging into three separate timelines during the events of Ocarina of Time.
The first timeline, The Fallen Hero Timeline, contains the events of Zelda games featuring the series’s overhead view functions, such as A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, and A Link Between Worlds. The second timeline, the Child Timeline, contains the events of Majora’s Mask, the sequel to Ocarina of Time (although,we will merge both games into one route), Twilight Princess, and Four Swords Adventure. The third timeline, the Adult Timeline containing the events of Zelda games featuring Toon Link, including The Wind Waker, it’s sequel The Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks.
The only question is, which timeline will you choose to follow?
Unified Timeline (i.e. Skyward Sword, The Minish Cap, Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask)
Fallen Hero Timeline (i.e. A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, A Link Between Worlds, Oracle series)
Child Timeline (i.e. Twilight Princess, Four Swords Adventure)
-or-
Adult Timeline (i.e. Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks)
