It was after school hours, and Jack was in his Language Arts class, finishing up some extra credit work. There were a few kids still lingering around in the classroom, albeit not for educational reasons. Jessica was sitting near the back of the classroom, drawing something on a sheet of paper. It was a little odd that she was here because she was a grade below Jack, but he thought that maybe she had the same classroom as him, just during a different period. Standing nearer to the door was Trish and her group of cheer-leading friends. Jack never really bothered them since they were the typical popular group. He didn't really feel like he fit in with them, so he just avoided them. Apart from them, there were a few other people which Jack didn't recognize, just hanging out doing whatever. Something that did catch his attention, though, was the empty desk with a sheet of what looked like test answers from some sort of science class, and a cell phone. On the desk next to this pile was an open purse. Jack came up with an idea.
Earlier in the week, Jack had managed to convince his mom to buy him an interesting item online. A shrink ray. A company listed as SRco. had recently brought out a work-in-progress shrink ray for "professional and recreational use", and Jack told his mom that if he brought in this functioning shrink ray, he would get massive extra credit for his class. Believing his story, Carey (Jack's mom) went ahead and bought
"Now", Jack thought, "is the perfect time to try this baby out". With that, he secretly brought out the cell phone-looking device, and pointed what looked like the proper end toward himself. He clicked the "Switch On" button, and without making a sound or even emitting any light, spontaneously reduced Jack's size down to three inches.
Fortunately for Jack, he left his cell phone in his backpack and not out on the desk, so he felt at least a little more secure about not having anyone steal it. But now that he was small, where was he going to explore?
