Rei nearly cried when she heard those words. No one had come to save her the night the monster came into her home. No one was there to save her or her family from the evil creature with the evil eyes and razor-sharp claws.
She could still hear the cries and screams in her nightmares and see the pool of red under the chunks of meat that she once upon a time called mother and father. All while the monster laugh and laugh before setting its eyes on her.
The creature wanted to kill her too. The creature wanted to strip the flesh from her bones like it had done to her parents. She tried to run but the monster was too big and too fast. It caught her before she could even make it to the front door.
It lashed out with it hands trying to hold her down, laughing while its hungry eyes were alite with glee. It was going to cut her up like a slasher in her father's horror movie collection. She struggled and struggled but was just too weak.
But luck was on her side. Her struggle had caused her to bump into the living room table. On it were a pair of scissors that she forgot to put back after her mother had helped her with a school project.
They were long and sharp like the monster's claws and would ultimately prove to be her salvation that night. They'd fallen right into her hands during the struggle and the beast had no idea. It was far too engrossed in her fear. Soaking it in like a dirty sponge.
That's when she saw her chance. On instinct she kneed the freak in the stomach which caused it to grunt and with its attention now divided, she freed her hand and jammed the scissors in the monster's left eye.
It screamed and screamed as it fell on its back and red liquid poured out of its wound like a fountain. She could see it as she scooted away, the monster writhing in pain as it cursed her and tried to free the scissors.
She was scared. More terrified than she could ever remember being up to that point. She wanted to get away. Needed to get away. She rose onto shaky legs and began to run to the door. She quickly undid every lock and ran off into the night.
As she did all she could hear were the monsters screams in her ear. Scream of agony and vengeance. She didn't look back. She knew it would only slow her down. That's what her father used to tell her anyway.
That's how she'd wound up at the orphanage surrounded by other kids just like her who had nobody. That's also where she met him... Mr. Shogo Sakurai. The only adult who would look at her.
He placed a hand on top of her head as the tears began to fall from her eyes. While the other kids were talking to adults in the adoption area, he was the only one who came further in to talk to her.
"My dear sweet child. You've been through so much, haven't you?" he began, his voice calm and concerned. "Society may have failed you, but I promise you I won't. I can take you away from here... that is, if you'll let me."
She looked at him through the water mist of her vision and saw his warm and disarming smile. She sniffled once and nodded her head.
"What is your name my dear?" he asked.
"Rei..." she answered. "Rei Valentin Kazoum."
Sakurai smiled. "Well, as of today you are now Rei Sakurai, understood?"
Rei nodded as the man known as Sakurai took her hand. As the two left to the adoption area he had one more thing to say.
