After putting on her shoes Sarrah walks down a hall of cells. Looking at the row of men eyeing them boardly.
“ ew this one’s too fat,” she says passing a yellow bald fat man.
“ hey I might be in prison but I have feelings!” The bald man says indignantly.
But Sarrah isn’t paying attention because she just came, to her favorite inmate.
“ Uncle Walter you’ll play with me!” And Sarrah is delighted when Walter looks up at her with a smile.
“ Hey kiddo what’s going on!” Walter says happily approaching the cage door.
“ and what happened to Robbie?” Walter asks remembering his cellmate from this morning.
“ he’s a jerk so I put him in timeout,” Sarah says proudly, and Walter gulps.
“ Well, then I guess I better be a good playmate what do you have in mind?”
“ Hey, can I take Mr. fluffy but for a walk?” Sarrah is asking a guard Walter is now in the dog costume.
“ Hey, Jasper how’s the wife and kid?” Walter says up to the man who stands by the front door.
“ not much Taylor’s gonna play football we’re hoping he can win this weekend,” Jasper says unfazed to Walter.
“ Mr. fluffy but dogs don’t talk,” Sarah says as if this is a law of life such as gravity or inertia.
“ so they don’t well can we go for this walk?” Walter says with a playful laugh.
“ Yeah, I guess” and then to Sarrah.
“ don’t let him fill up on dog treats you’ll ruin grawl night,” Jasper says smirkingly.
“ gee thanks Jasper glad I have you in my corner,” Walter says sarcastically. To which Jasper just grins showing his million-dollar smile.
As Sarrah walks and Walter follows they start to talk having their usual conversation. First about school and Sarrah‘s grades then about boys Sarrah might like Sarah of course does most of the talking. But Walter is happy to listen he’s enjoying the fresh air until Walter is caught off guard.
“ you know I don’t get it why do you play along with me?” They’re over by the creek near the prison, wear a few benches and even a few picnic tables have been set up for the guards to sit at during break time or after work.
“ well,” Walter says going around in a circle as a dog does before laying down.
“I’m serving two consecutive life sentences and at least this gets me outside”, “ and?” Sarrah says impatiently.
“ well and I guess I have a soft spot you kinda remind me of my granddaughter,” Walter says looking up at her. To see a smiling Sarrah what happens next?
