"Natalie?" your brother's voice says on the phone. Even though you two just had a shouting exchange a few minutes ago, you're still happy to hear his voice.
"Yeah," you tell him, "I got my bag and dug out the satellite phone."
"Well, once we descend down into the tunnels, we won't be able to get a hold of each other." Your brother pauses, then says, "I tell you what. I'm going to have Rob (your future brother-in-law) go back to the base camp. There's a spare satellite phone there. And anytime one of us gets to any point where we've got open sky above us, we'll give him a call. He can relay messages between us. Which hopefully won't be necessary, since I'm hoping we'll run into each other soon."
"That...is an excellent plan," you say with a sigh of relief.
"So how're you doing down there?" a feminine voice says. You smile at the sound of your brother's future wife.
"Banged up but still moving," you say with a wan smile.
"Well, get yourself cleaned up with your first aid kid," your brother tells you. "We'll see you soon, Natalie."
As the conversation ends, you feel your spirits lifted. You get your first aid kit out, clean yourself up, take a couple of healthy swallows from your water bottle, and even eat an energy bar. You tie up your hair in a loose ponytail and get ready to move forward.
