At last, the button sinks into the Pokeball with a satisfying click. Then the ball splits open, throwing you off and down to the dirt. A blinding flash comes from the ball, and you avert your eyes. The Shinx doesn’t, and it yelps and stumbles back. As it reels, you wait for the light to dissipate, then look towards the ball again.
Standing next to the Pokeball is a Chimchar, and as you expected, she is gigantic compared to you. However, the sight doesn’t frighten you at all. This is your starter, and although you only met each other recently, you two have quickly grown quite attached to each other. You enjoy her cheerful, feisty attitude, and she seems to respect your ambition as a trainer. You’re happy to see her, and you feel a lot more confident now that you have a friend to protect you from the Shinx.
However, you notice Chimchar seems confused. She’s looking all around, and you assume she’s trying to figure out where her trainer is.
“Cha?” she asks, her confusion obvious in her voice.
“Down here!” you shout, waving your arms.
The primate looks down at you. For several seconds, her huge gray eyes stare at your tiny form among the grass. Then, she gasps and jumps back.
“Cha! Chim, cha char?”
“I can explain later,” you say. “For now, we’ve got a wild Shinx to deal with!”
Chimchar looks over at the feline. It’s recovered from the flash, and now it growls and lowers its stance.
“Shinx! Shi!” it cries.
The Fire-type frowns at it. She moves past you, shaking the ground with each huge step, and puts herself between you and the wild Pokémon. She crosses her arms and bares her fangs, and the flame on her rump flares up.
You look between Chimchar’s legs to keep an eye on the Shinx, and as you do, a thought occurs to you. Chimchar is pretty young, and still not a strong battler. Meanwhile, you have no idea how strong this Shinx is. It’s probably young too, but it might be more powerful or skilled at battling. If so, it would be a bad idea to let Chimchar fight it. If she loses, you’ll be on your own again, and the Shinx would probably devour you as soon as possible. With that in mind, it might be better to flee. But you’re not sure if you and Chimchar could outrun the wild Pokemon.
What do you do?
