Tom made it to class just in time, took a seat, and got out his pencil and notebook. The professor, Dr. Larson, was standing at the front of the room. She didn't look stern, as such, but her face gave off just enough gravitas to let Tom know that having this class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings was going to be complete slog.
"Alright, looks like everyone's here," said Dr. Larson. "So, we may as well begin. Today we're just going to be going through the syllabus and making sure that everyone's on the same page. I still expect you to take notes." Her eyes locked with Tom, whose notebook was still closed. Getting the hint, he opened it up and picked up his pencil. "Good. The reason that I'm spending today on this is because I don't want anybody to tell me that they 'didn't know' an assignment was going to be due, or 'didn't know' what the reading for the day was going to be. I go through that every semester, and it's exhausting." She sighed and turned to the board.
Tom lost focus almost immediately. Why bother paying attention? The syllabus was online, after all.
