No Beaststone Required

(Alternative Spoilery Title: Her Ancestors Were Cursed, Therefore She’s Cursed. Also, heavy violence warning.)

Claude studied the monster in the distance. Its form was obscured mostly by the heavy smoke rising into the air. He couldn’t help but approach, his unquenchable thirst for knowledge beating out the natural instincts to stay away and stay alive. However, as he passed crow of wrecked buildings blocking his view, he caught onto a metal he could hardly believe.

The monster was wearing a torn Officer’s Academy uniform.

“What the…?” He rushed forward, shooting warning shots at deranged villagers that charged at him. Once struck a guy in the thigh and sent him collapsing onto a pile of rubble. He rounded corners and even cut through some trees until he was at the base of the monsters feet and got a good look at the beast.

What told him all he needed to know about the identity of the monster was the sheer amount of light blue hair everywhere. There was only one person in the academy with hair like that, but he was having rouble comprehending just what caused this to happen.

“M-Marianne!?” He gasped, keeping his bow at the ready. “Oh, Goddess, what did Tomas do to you? I should’ve kept an eye on…”

He found himself staring at the beast-like features. Her nails had grown long and turned black, resembling claws more than they did fingernails. Her teeth had also elongated, her canines much more pronounced. Her eyes now had anger in them rather than the tired, defeated look. Her ears were pointed and her hair, normally kept up and out of the way, rolled down her back, much longer than it should have been.

This is the same sweet Marianne you know, Claude reminded himself. Just as he finished, Marianne swept up an encroaching Flame Emperor Soldier and brought him to her mouth, mercilessly sinking her teeth into his chest and tearing him in half as she shook her neck like a feral animal. The cracking of bones snapping and flesh tearing ingrained itself into the house leader's ears.

Claude wretched at the sight as Marianne casually tossed the remaining half of the body aside. It hit the roof of a building with a vivid splat. He was just glad wasn’t an innocent. However, he knew that his perception of Marianne would change after this.

Then the giantess’ eyes stared back at him. Claude began to back away, pulling at the drawstring of his bow. She stepped closer, her footfalls shaking the ground at her feet.

“Easy, Marianne,” Claude said, still backing away. “I’m a friend. I don’t want to hurt you. I just want to help.”

It didn’t take long before he backed into what was the last undamaged building in Remire. He slowly took aim, waiting ro the precise moment she was close enough. He didn’t want to hit anything vital, but he needed to stun her just long enough to make an escape.

He let an arrow loose sending it into the giantess’ cheek. She let out a pained roar, sending a combination of spit and blood flying everywhere. She lifted her foot high into the air and over the archer. Claude managed to duck out of the way and into the cover of the trees moments before the massive boot crashed into the building, reducing it to rubble.

She turned her attention towards him again, beginning another march. Another pained roar escaped her lips as collapsed to the ground, nearly pinning him under her body. Half of the patch of forest he was in was taken down beneath her weight.

The telltale sound of a chain went through the air as the Sword of the Creator whipped back into place. The expression on the mercenary turned professor’s face remained stoic, despite having to do battle with one of their students.

Does anything rattle Teach? Claude thought, getting up and rushing to the professor’s side.
