Chapter #6

The Worst Sentence Imaginable

    by: JackInTheirBox Author IconMail Icon
A gavel banged with the sound of a dropped anvil. “Bernadetta von Varley! You stand accused of shrinking the princess! How do you plead?”

The purple-haired girl felt a thousand demonic eyes peering into her very soul as the entire courthouse turned to face her. She barely stammered a single word. “I- Wh- E- I-”

“That’s her, everyone!” Hubert stood up from the bleachers. “That’s the one who hurt my dear perfect Lady Edelgard!”

Lady Rhea rose beside them. “This one is unclean and impure and must be purged from the face of this earth for their sinful existence!”

Professor Byleth also took a stand. “And they missed last week’s homework!”

The entire courthouse gasped in collective shock and disgust. Bernadetta squealed in red-hot embarrassment and fright - and then screamed as she realized that she was only in her underwear.

The judge pointed at the guilty party. “Bernadetta von Varley! We sentence you to the worst punishment imaginable!”

Bernadetta squirmed as she felt her life crumbling around her. Was she being locked in the darkest dingiest dungeon there was? Was it straight to the gallows to chop off her head?!

“One bajillion years of working as a chef in a talkative cafe!”

The gavel banged to punctuate its sentence as Bernadetta fell to her knees, cursing the heavens themselves.

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-”

“-Bernie? Bernadetta? Can you hear me?”

Bernie returned to reality and looked at the tiny princess in her hands.

“Good. Please don’t space out like that again, you had me concerned. I just need you to take me to Professor Byleth and-”

Bernadetta silenced the miniaturized regent as she cupped both of her hands together, locking Edelgard between her sweaty palms, and ran out of the room as fast as her wobbly knees could carry her. She didn’t stop for anything as she made a beeline through the student accommodations. Unfortunately for the princess now being jostled around in her ‘cage’, none of the passerbys sought to question Bernadetta fleeing in terror back to her room, which was 'just a Bernie thing' by now. Edelgard cursed under her breath as she was ricocheted with each frantic step Bernadetta took. This was going to be more problematic than she had hoped.

Bernie slammed the door shut behind her as she found herself back in her home away from home. There was no prying eyes or loud voices in her room - just peaceful solitude and not a care in the world. Except that now she had the heir to the Empire in the palm of her hands, of course.

Babbling with panic, the purple-haired girl whipped her head around, trying to find someplace to store Edelgard - Bernie knew that the miniaturized princess wouldn’t want to live in her room forever.

Bernie squealed with fright as she felt Edelgard kicking inside her cupped hands in protest. There had to be somewhere to put her...!
