The Ghosts Left No Choice!

(Post Chapter 7, pre-Chapter 8, No spoilers)

*Creak*

Lysithea felt another wave of goosebumps on her arms at the sound of a creak in the night. It was a late night, a few days after the battle of the Eagle and the Lion. Even Lysithea had a small smile on her lips thinking about how proud Claude was after the Golden Deer had won the battle. “I wonder if they’ll keep calling this ‘The Battle of the Eagle and Lion’. We trounced the other Houses so badly I believe a new name is in order. Let’s call it ‘The Effortless Victory of the Deer’.” That Claude was quite a character, but Lysithea could not argue against his well earned pride after the battle. She herself had done quite-

*Creeeeeak*

Lysithea cringed involuntarily, startled by yet another creak in the night. She growled in frustration, she simply had to get over her fears. She had just been part of a big mock battle with plenty of talented students, one that people were still resting from, and she hardly flinched at all. But one creak in a dark library in the middle of night put her on edge; ridiculous! All because of a fear of ghosts she knew she should’ve outgrown by now.

“Honestly, I should be better than this.” She grumbled to herself, continuing to look through the books on the library shelf. The library was rather creepy in its current state. It was rather late at night, so late that even Annette of the Blue Lions, who’d work so long in the library she’d fall asleep, was gone! It certainly didn’t help that Tomas, the man who would usually be managing the library, even at this time of night, had disappeared for quite a while now. So Lysithea was completely alone in a dark library in the middle of the night, well past the bedtime some of the Golden Deer joked with her about.

“I simply have to put this ridiculous fear of mine to rest, it’s holding me back more than it should.” She said, greatly exaggerating how much effect it had on her. She couldn’t help but be hard on herself at the moment, the creepy atmosphere would feed the fears of anyone with her kind of phobia. This was the only time of day where she could safely accomplish what she wanted to. Well, safely was exaggerating, least embarrassing time was more accurate. Some of her housemates already knew about her fear, but letting them see her looking for a solution meant she would acknowledge it in front of them. For now, Lysithea would rather ineffectually deny she had any such fear.

After a while of searching, and a few more startling creaks, Lysithea finally found something that could help her. In one of the more hidden corners of the library, she found a book dedicated to spirits and methods to ward them off. To Lysithea’s dismay, this book was the only one of its kind, nothing else in the library even discussed the idea of ghosts. “I guess this will have to do.” Lysithea whispered as she began flipping through the book. She knew that what she was looking for was likely at the end.

Her intuitions were proven right as there was a spell at the end of the book that was perfectly suited for helping her put her fears to rest. “Finally! A spell that will help me ward off all those creepy ghosts.” Lysithea daintily folded the corner of the page she was on and held it against her chest. She’d usually have a bookmark, but she didn’t want to bother with it on this night. “Once I cast this, I’ll be able to forget all about ghosts and never be afraid of them again.” Lysithea let out a frightened squeal when another creak echoed in the library, as if the ghosts were calling her bluff. “T-time for bed!” The white haired girl croaked, setting her now extinguished candle on a nearby table. It was so dark now that she had simply decided to use a single cast of her Fire spell to light the world around her instead of a candle. It certainly wasn’t so she could defend herself from any ghosts wanting to steal the book from her.

Though the trip felt like an eternity, Lysithea was able to make it back to her room unharmed by any ghosts. The worst part was getting into her room; she had moved so quickly to open and close the door that she improperly canceled her Fire spell, burning her hand a bit. The young girl was so anxious that she didn’t even bother to get out of her uniform, instead diving under the covers of her bed, apparently a safe haven from ghosts. Eagerly, she opened up the book back to where she left off, making sure to undo the fold she had made.

Her eyes quickly scanned across the page, only confirming the details she considered the most important. The spell would indeed ward off any spirits and she didn’t have to worry about recasting it, ever. It was a one time spell that required a lot of magical energy to pull off. Of course Lysithea had plenty of that to spare, so she cast the spell as soon as she found the method. A feeling of comfort washed over the girl as she felt the spell take effect. With a sigh of relief, she shut the book and deposited it on a nearby shelf. Tired from the long night, she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep feeling safe with her new spell working.

Lysithea had no idea that the spell she had used was going to a lot more than make her forget about her fear of ghosts. In the morning she would wake up, noting that her room had changed a lot since she fell asleep. What did her haphazard spell casting do to her?

You have the following choices:

1. She had grown in her sleep, a lot!

*Noteb*
2. She shrunk while she was asleep!

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
