It was one of the most exclusive Halloween parties in town, and the fact that your fiancee had gotten an invite was beyond lucky. The Thurston Mansion Halloween Ball was an annual party that had run every year since before anyone could remember, having been started almost exactly 100 years ago by Vance Thurston himself, and continued by descendants, up to his great-grandson, Vance Thurston IV into the present day. And this year was the big triple digit anniversary, and it was due to be huge.
Only the most important people in town got an invite, and your fiancee's current work had made her one of the biggest names in town thanks to her recent appointment as the VP of marketing of a major firm. The youngest Vice President the company had ever had at just 26 years old. You weren't quite as influential, but you worked as a software designer at a big computer manufacturer, so you were comfortable. But an invite to this party? It could open up doors you didn't even know existed, especially if you made friends with the frequent guests.
There was just one catch. Your fiancee, Hannah, wanted to pick a memorable couples costume, and had some unique ideas in mind that she wasn't budging from.
"I don't know, going in drag?" you asked. "This is supposed to be a big networking thing too, isn't it?"
"Don't think of it as drag, think of it as... subverting the gender norms! People will talk about it, we have to be memorable." Hannah remarked. "Especially if we want an invite back."
"I guess, but..." you started.
"Not another word." Hannah put a finger to your lips. "If we go in some generic store-bought costume, we'll be a laughing stock. And more importantly, you're going to love my costume idea."
"All right, I'll play ball. What's the idea?" you asked.
