Chapter #3

Search for a new target

While you did like the idea of performing an unorthodox swap, something other than just swapping with another human being, you ultimately decide against swapping with the dog. Swapping with an animal was a cool idea, but the dog was unfamiliar to you, you didn't even know its owner. If you were going to do such an uncontrolled swap as your first real test of the device, you figured you should at least not be so reckless as to swap away something with a random animal. For all you knew, the dog could end up escaping or something, and you'd never see the parts you swapped with it again. As such, you cancel the target, and time starts again.

Instead, you focus your attention on more familiar things; things in your own house. Your family unfortunately did not have a pet, so swapping with an animal was out of the question. However, animals weren't the only thing on your mind. If the remote could work on animals, what else could it work on?

Inanimate objects seemed like a good pick, especially considering had you could find in your house. Your younger sister Stella loved toys, Barbies especially, so you'd have no shortage of targets to swap with, many of them being humanoid or animal-like enough that the remote should have no issues working with them, assuming you could target them without Stella taking notice.

Pictures seemed like another good option. After all, the remote could work on real people, so why not pictures of people? Hannah's room was a good candidate here, thanks to the posters she kept around her room, though he doubted you'd be able to sneak inside to find a good target without her causing issues.

While Hannah's posters would be good for testing pictures of real people, you couldn't help but wonder if the remote could also be used on fictional characters. You had a video game console and a computer in your room, so finding a suitable character to target wouldn't be hard. Though, whether it was one of Hannah's posters or one of your games, you found yourself wondering whether it would actually target the person or character depicted, or simply the poster or game itself.

In that regard, you had a bit of a think about what other items in your house you could use to test the remote. The living room and dining room were probably off limits, considering your parents were down there, and you didn't really want to have to explain why had a reality altering remote to them. The bathroom was probably free, but nothing in there seemed like an appealing option. James and Heather's rooms were available for your to check, but with how young they were, you couldn't really think of anything they owned that you wanted to swap with, aside from potentially some of their toys, which was something you could get from Stella instead. Kevin had some interesting things in his room, but with how quickly his interests changed, there was a real risk of whatever you swapped with being thrown out, defeating the purpose of trying to swap in a more controlled environment.

That left your parents' room. You initially dismiss it, but a memory lingering at the back of your mind makes you reconsider. You remember rummaging through your parents' closet when you were younger, and thinking back on it, the items inside could provide a variety of different targets. From the old photo albums, to the forgotten and unused clothes and costumes, to the items your younger self didn't know the purpose of but now you certainly recognise, there was plenty to work with, assuming you didn't allow yourself to be caught in the act.

As far as you were concerned, those seemed to be the best options to choose from when it came to making some unorthodox swaps within your own household. In the back of your mind, you start drifting to other possibilities, like visiting a friend or going to some other controlled environment to find an unorthodox target, but for now, you take a moment to consider whether any of the targets in your home have really caught your attention.
