Gracie was a young dog of normal weight, not a quite a puppy anymore but still youthful and very cute. Almost 2 years old. Pure bred cocker spaniel with beautiful light tan fur.
She was a puppy mill puppy, originally adopted by a single mom with 4 young kids. Those kids terrorized her and caused Gracie to act out a bit in her puppy years, She peed on the floor, she chewed things for comfort, she barked and whined a lot..
So the mom, being already overwhelmed in her life with her kids, had enough and decided to take Gracie to a shelter.
As the mom walked out of the shelter, a little old lady named Arlene was excitedly walking in.
Arlene was 79 years old and very lonely, her husband passed away the year before. Her children and grandchildren lived many miles away. She didn't have many neighbors close by. She remembered she used to have a little dog when she was growing up and the idea hit her one day while knitting, that she would get a dog! Maybe not a puppy, because they are high maintenance, but a young dog that would keep her company for the lonely moments. It would bring some sense of purpose back in to her life that she desperately needed.
She saw Gracie, being checked in and looking so sad and scared, but also very cute and she was just the right size and age for Arlene to manage....
Arlene immediately took her home.
Gracie was a little afraid of human touch because the kids in her previous home were very aggressive with her so she shied away from Arlene's touch every time Arlene reached out to pet her.
"Gracie, it's ok, girl" Arlene cooed. This wasn't quite going as expected but Arlene knew she would get Gracie to trust her eventually.
Arlene gets out a big Costco bag of treats.. not realizing they are for larger breed puppies and very high in calorie..
She had read that you can win a dogs trust by hand feeding. So Arlene held out a treat in her palm to see if Gracie would take it
