Mowgli was wandering far past where he usually went in the jungle, even getting near the edge of the jungle. He followed the river downstream as far as it went. There, he discovered a dirt road, and a wooden bridge going across, along with some plains opening up at the edge of the jungle. The thing that interested him the most, however, was a pair of small, bright red spheres that he saw right in the middle of the road. They almost looked like fruit, so Mowgli tried biting into one, only realizing that it was incredibly hard like a marble as it slipped out between his teeth down to his throat where he instinctively swallowed it.
He was a bit worried about how hard that "fruit" was, and had no clue what he was actually dealing with. Little did he know that what he just swallowed was an experimental portal capsule that fell of a truck while it was in transit to a lab for further testing. The portal was designed to open and close with enough force, and Mowgli accidentally did just that with his teeth, swallowing it to boot. Luckily for him, he had swallowed the receiving end of the portal, so it wasn't about to drain out his stomach indefinitely. It would, however, fill up if anything was put into the other portal, and Mowgli had no way of closing it back up.
Mowgli was now more cautious with the second marble-like portal capsule, staring at it closely to try to figure out what it was, only seeing a minus sign in a circle, with the opened one in his stomach having a plus-sign on the capsule.
